About time i put a project thread together!!

Post by snathe »

Hi guys & girls :hi:
Thought it really was about time i put a project thread together for my GT2! I mean, it has been 19 months and it's STILL not finished :dash:
It all started in early April 2009, finding a really clean '91 GT2 on the bay, at a bargain price!

It was advertised as being a non-runner, but just turned out to be a perished vac pipe behind the carb  I drove it back to Nottingham from Chester, and it drove like new! Took it for an MOT the next morning, which it passed with no problems...
There really wasn't a mark on it, apart from a rust bubble above each door handle. I took the handles off and found that there was huge amounts of rot where previously (badly) repaired break-in damage had festered.
I then found pics of this de-kitted Rocco on the net...

Seeing this car made me go and remove the bodykit from mine straight away! Little did i know how much paint damage this would cause
Removing the kit also revealed this little supprise

The full strip down had to start...

A good 2nd hand wing was found for sensible money. And as i was attempting the "euro look" the next step was to sort the arches so some ample sized wheels could fit in there as snugly as possible.
A set of 8x15 (et15) BBS RS033's were bought and fitted with 185/45x15 Nankangs. Add to these, a set of coilovers, and i could judge what needed to be done with the return lips.

The rears (completely scab free) were rolled and sealed, and the front returns were simply cut off. At this time, the holes in the bodywork where the bodykit attached were also all welded up and smoothed.

Next on the list was a different look for the front end... I really liked the mk1 front end, as it's more inkeeping with the look of a non-kitted car imo.
Headlights from a BMW e30 were bought and carefully modified to fit the mk2 Rocco's metal headlight frames. Add a mk1 grill, and hey presto :bye:

Next was the prep and fresh paint...

And that just about brings us up to date... Stay tuned for more updates :good:

Amazing thread you've started - inspiring!

I'm with you all the way on the round lights too. Been thinking of going that route with my own GT, but I'm a long way off fitting new lights. :crying:

Can't wait to see more. :good:

Thanks for the kind comments guys :vcool: I can finally see the light at the end of the very long tunnel, lol!
Sadly, i had to sell the RS's a couple of months ago... But i have my eye on some new wheels with the same size & offset.
I think i've got the stance near enough how i want it, although the offside driveshaft is sat on the underside of the chassis leg :crying: There'll be updates soon when i get my mate to "notch" the chassis legs for a bit more clearance :yup:
Today, i'm removing the doors from the white 16v Scala i bought for parts, stripping them, then prepping for paint.
Also (if i get time) i need to do a little more flatting & polishing of the fresh paint.

Love it, this is one of the reasons why ive decided to keep the mk2. i didnt know if it would suit the euro look as people call it, but it does. great work :good:

Cheers guys :vcool:
Progress has been very slow this week due to work being a tad manic. Just the doors, roof & scuttle to paint and that'll be it for the bodywork...
I've decided on some wheels too, but can't decide on the colour... Opinions??

Excellent work so far. Stance and tidy wheels should be standard on all roccos :vcool:
