HELP! Belt snapped!

Post by Tomsy »

Help please. Only had the car 2 weeks and the belt has snapped and boiled my engine. Basically cars been squeeling so i tightened the belt on sunday and it stopped making the noise, started again last night and coming back from football tonight. got about quarter mile from my house and the battery light comes on followed by sudden rise in temp. managed to get it to my house and looked under the bonnet ande apart from some boiling water and hissing/bubbling the belts gone. anyway i need to know how to find out which i need to replace, 1- the water pump 2- the alternator, as i dont know which one was making the noise or caused the belt to snap. HELP!

check the pulleys on alt, waterpump, crank pulley for burrs that could cut into the belt.chances are the belt was on its wayout anyway unless it was new.

no..........fan belt is an old term that has transfered to the v-belt which is called so as when fitted its shapped like a v..the best money you can spend would be on a haynes manual,if you havent already done so,i have 1 for sale.the cambelt runs over the cam, intermederate and crank shafts (my spelling is poor).

one of your local motor factors'll have one in stock. I always carry a spare after mine broke. You won't have caused any damage in 1/4 mile. Just change the belt (A"uxillary belt" is the "correct" term when it doesn't actually drive a fan) assuming the pulleys appear OK, and only investigate further if the squeaking re-appears, as that'll indicate the alternator or water pump being too tight, or the pulleys out of alignment.

+1 on "get a haynes"... best money you'll spend during 'rocco ownership!
