1.8i cold start proceedure

Post by kevtherev »

How should a 1.8i be started from cold
Full throttle?... 1/4?
no touchy the throttle?

I am having issues with my Scala.. dang thing starts on the button when warm without touching the acc.
When it's cold it, if I catch the first chug from the engine it'll fire up... but seems to enjoy full chat to get it lumping over.

I'm thinking Aux air valve.. but then that's based on Haynes info

indeed,no touchy throtle regardless of temperature.airdevice main candidate, remove it and clean with carb cleaner or wd40.i used to put mine in the freezer for an hour to check the valve opens freely on its own.

If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!

Agree with Ben, the later DX engines don't need a touch on the throttle, the earlier ones did. This is what is stated in the user handbooks I have for both my Storm and Scala.

OK update...
I have checked the operation of these items.
Thermotime switch... working correctly
Cold start valve.. working correctly
Auxiliary air valve...working correctly
wiring to these switches is in good order.

After struggling to start the engine this morning , then all this connection removal and testing the engine fired up with out using throttle... coincidence?
I'm not convinced yet that it was a dirty contact.
I shall move my attention to a leaky injector next, then the sensor plate/control plunger.

after that I'm stumped :D
