Steering Racks - Scirocco V Mk1 Golf

Post by scalainj »

tGuys

Is their any difference at all in terms of ratio, lock, internals that anyone knows off?

My rack is failing and i have the choice of a GSF or similar for £85 or a Quafe quick rack with 2.9 lock for £140 ish.
Spoke to quaife yesterday and they require a Mk1 rack for this conversion so before i toddle up there later and do the deal i just want to make sure that the internals will fit into a Scirocco rack

Powerflex, Bugpack or if you want solid mounts, have a search on ClubGTi as I think they had one of the tuning firms make some up and retail them.

Ok.
However I don't think there are any seals or bushes inside. I cannot see any in the exploded drawing in the workshop manual, but have a look on ETKA, just to be sure.

Thanks Pete

I don't have Ekta, well i do but this new machine won't run it

Rack will be off today and in bits so i know exactly whats inside. Never done a rack but the man from Quaife tells me i need bushes/seals.

Appreciate your help. I have that workshop exploded Scirocco guide but its miles away (useful eh)

Cheers

Still not done - all down to the pinion bearing

20*35*7 is the one in my rack, 20*32*7 is the one quaife supply which doesn't fit the housing. Spoken to them of course but they assure me theres is the right size. Evey rack i've seen now and i've seen many (from all kinds of Mk1 chassis (they are all the same)) has the 20*35*7 size. Of course 20*32*7 is comercially available but the the 35mm is not.
This comes down to Quaife being lazy in their measurements and knowledge and they are plain not interested. Bear that in mind if you are buying quaife goods that customer service comes under - None whatsover because we know best even though they admitted that they are Ford guys and don't really know VWs :dunno:

I might do a how to on this - just in case anyone else ever fancies it so you can avoid the time and effort i've spent scraching my head

However i am more than happy to be corrected if anyone has a rack with a 32mm pinion bearing and housing. Its possible the dimensions were changed of just that one piece and nothing else by 3mm of course.

Thread resurrection!

I fitted the quaife kit in one of my racks for the racing car. Went in fine and works brilliantly. I got it with the Club GTI group buy years ago when they started the production of it.

I have it with a tiny steering wheel and 195 Toyo R888, it's VERY heavy.

Seems that it could be a problem with aftermarket racks. I haven't read the entire thread though so don't know the outcome.

Edit cos its an old thread but may be of use to someone.

Interesting to see that Quaife knew about this problem back in 2007

First and last time i'll get anything from them. Also nothing to do with aftermarket racks - my rack casing is original and it would appear that the pinion bearing housing can be either 32mm which i've never seen or 35mm - which i have seen a load of

Anyway Kent Bearings cameto my rescue by souring the correct bearing in Holland. Its been fitted for a while and its great and i highly recommend - getting someone else to fit it
