bad tappet noise!!

Post by norman »

Hi all
Im new to the sight and im wanting some expert advice, or just some advice please. Just bought a 1990 gtII, its been stood for at least 2 possibly 3 years. With it being stood for a few years on the way home when getting towed, i put it in 5th gear to turn the engine over and get some oil round it, when i lifted off the clutch it made a horrible rattling noise which i 1st thought was a brocken cv joint?

Got it home, checked the oil again, cleaned the carb and put a new battery on. It fired up for about 20 seconds then cut out, probably the old fuel? the thing that worries me was the loud tappet noise!! louder than normal i would expect. Im no mechanic so the only thing i think it might be is the oil isnt getting to the top of the engine, does this sound possible? if so how can i fix it?

The only thing ive done since firing it up is take the oil pump off and inspect it following the haynes manual instructions, all seems well there. so if anyone has any advice for me it would be much appretiated!!!

If the engine hasnt been run for a while all the oil sinks to the bottom resulting in the tappets clattering loudly for a few seconds on startup. I used to have this with my old one,i think it mostly effects carburettor models. If its been stood for that long i would bung some nice fresh oil in with a new filter as well.

drain the fuel out and give it some fresh. run the engine up to temperature then drain the oil out, change the filter and fill it up again. 10w40 or 15w40 mineral

personally i wouldn't recommend the use of an "oil flush" type product on an older engine. it is more likely to cause harm than do good.
