Mk1 storm resto / was a storm

Post by monzajake »

Aquired a mk1 storm a short while back, the car has been off the road for around 10ish years. First few years it was sitting in a garage, then was shoehored on
to the then owners front garden, which isnt a good idea, as everyone who's owned a mk1 knows they suffer from the dreaded rust. Why tho ive never worked it
out, ive seen golf of the same age, pulled out of gardens open barns etc and they always seem to be that much better on the corrosion front...

Anyway got the old back into my lock up (which i had ment to give up) and there it stayed for a good few month's before i could do anything positive with it.
So now ive started work on her, she's a 1981 (W) storm without a sunroof, light met blue with worn out leather in blue..Its all 100% original apart from a set koni adjustable dampers & a K&N air filter.

With it back in an area i can work and strip her down to a shell the first thing i wanted to do was to remove the trusty 1.6 gti lump simply becouse i have another power plant in mind and the engine hadnt been started for a years. With the engine now removed it makes lifting moving etc abit easier on her.
With the engine removed and the engine bay sound from corrosion i got the bug to start stipping down the car and get my teeth stuck in. So i started with the rest of the front, lights bumper grill and wiring looms have all been removed and boxed up. Next up was the front wings. The drivers side came off a dodle which was strange. Strange couse what lerked was not good. The car had been in a crash at some stage of her life, and very poorly repaired, the front corner of the inner wing was not 100% straightend out and corrosion has spread from a poor repair to the front valance up to the chassis leg. After much poking around with a hammer & screwdriver i found that the chassis leg, where it meets the valance is corroded and holed..Balls. So i attacked the passengerside thankfully the wing was hard to remove and the inner wing is sound, more so around the area where it meets the front panel / chassis leg area..

Now with those areas covered and the car still on 4 wheels i started to gut the inside, just leaving the headlining. With this done it gave me good access
to knock around on the floor, inner sills, and boot space.. The end result was pretty good, front floors sound, rear floors sound, boot floor sound but inner
sills holed near to seatbelt mounts. Not bad at all i thought.

Next up was the arse. Now to jack her up on the jacking points is a nono for a car thats been sitting,so up it went via the rear beam...
Hmm a lot of corrsion and rust / rot..Big balls..
The drivers side rear chassis leg from the mount back is very rusty corroded and holed and the passenger side is getting there again from the mount back.
The mounts them selfs appear to have been repaired, bit of a bonus.. The rear valance is shot to bits on the drivers side and tender in places. The side sills
again are holed in areas with repairs in places. Rear arch's are getting tender and ive found a hole, no surprise really for the old girl.
Well now that ive pretty much covered the box section of the car for rust i'll carry on with the gutting. Abit of shame that its gone this way for the old girl, more so as the car has been zebarted (a form of rust treatment) what has worked well for her tho is under the bonnet its been undersealed ! and its sound.
Theres mountains to do and ive not even scratched the surface yet  but the ideas keep following in around the heart of the car..
Being that i became a dad early part of year the car will take longer to do as my little girl does take priority...
Heres a few pics of what in faced with.....contains rust...

Good news.
The rear panel which is only the lower half fits like a treat.
Replacement side sills fit perfect.
Rear wheel arches fit but not 100% right. Altho they dont need doing i thought i'd get them done.
Found a front end which i had from many moons back, and it's got the front section i need behind the indicators..result..

So far every thing is looking good, time to mark things out and get cutting...
Idea is to get the car 100% sound then start thinking about bodywork and colour/theme..
:chill:

Havent done much of late to her, been focusing on work as it's taken abit of a dive and using the spare weekday time with lisa and grace...
Ive now got 90% of the structal parts i need to repair her, all i need now is my brother to finish his rear wheel drive rs turbo conversion and get the welder busy on the storm...Still today i carried on with more stripping down, week or two ago i removed the engine, so i thought it would be good idea to carry on in the bay. So ive started to remove every thing including the loom... While poking this back though the bulkhead ive noted a lot on repairs and extra wires added in
i think it was for the alarm that was rigged in to the indicators...
Image
Managed to get the passenger wing off via a blow torch knife and a big arse flat screwdriver..god vw love there underseal stuff...plus side its solid as a rock..

But then i hit a downer, i thought i had a spare 16v loom and ecu sitting in box from when i converted the monza, but what it turns out to be is a late mk2 golf
8v loom, the engine that runs electronic injection and a 16v ecu..gutted couse i wanted to start mocking up the bay so i keep a mental note on whats what..but hey..
Also for some crazy idea to which i dont know why, i stuck on monza's old set of coilovers on the front, and loving the lower look but thats all miles away at the mo.
Image

Next time i want to drop the rear beam and remove the fuel system and long with the fuel lines and brake hose's...

heres to more updates :beers:

Right well ive pretty much finished stripping down the front now so ive turned to the rear end.
Ive managed to drop the rear beam, and the fuel tank along with getting the car nice and high to have a good stab around on the floor pans. Also ive fitted
some rear disc's to her as the old drums kept sticking now and then.
Ive pretty much stripped the inside bar the headling and dash, which has a nice long crack in it...

Good news tho floor pans are sound just some surface rust that isnt much to worry about at all.
Ive also eyed up the rear panel repair section, and its spot on,so that has all been marked out on the car ready for cutting out the old and welding the new in.
Side sills are 99% right just a little tweek here n there along with the rear arch's. As for the rear dreaded rear chassis repairs ive been looking every where
for cheaper prices and come up trumps with a company in leatherhead called B.M.G £18 per section. So in total i'll save around 20quid which is usefull for
mig wire or the gas.... Well come on money's tight now fatherhood is here...
Anyways some more pics to look at...

Not much really to update on the resto, apart from getting a 16v engine loom, and a gearbox, cheers mark and mike..
Stripped down the bumpers and used rust treatment on the brackets. There all painted lovly.

The new working space i had has now been taken over by lisa rag top escort, as it's outta tax and m.o.t so muggins here how has this to sort along with fixing the power roof on it :shocking:.
Been in discussion's with my old man regarding welding / using his car roller.
Oh yes i dug out a set of 14inch 5 spoke speedlines which i think will suit the year of the car..

But anyway a couple of people have asked when's the deadline ! Well tbh there isnt one, would love to have it sorted but next show season, yes it's doable but im trying to get on the housing ladder, keep my work load going, and support a family. So with all that time is tight.

With you there Jake. I've been sat around waiting for 'my welder' for weeks so I reckon my own initial plans for getting Poppy on the road next year are looking less doable by the day. Though some good folks on here have said they might be able to help me out.

I guess it's like a few wise souls have said to me, it'll be right when it's done and done when it's right.

Good luck mate!

:beers:

BINGO BINGO BINGO here we go...
Start of november/give a week or two my dad wants to get her back to his workshop as his mk2 zodiac will be finished paint wise and all glass in.

Perfect timing as the rear chassis sections are here looking sad not to be fixed to the car. So now every thing structal is in boxes or in the car and ready to go.
In the end i ordered the rear beam sections off ebay, and got a good deal on the postage ie paid for one to be posted. Bonus as i managed to sell some old
tot i had to pay for them.

Anyway expect to see some pics of the work coming up.... :yup:

Not much to report, at present the rear valance has been cut away and the new one mocked up the rear chassis have been hacked out and ive changed the tailgate to a better won which doesnt have the holes for the zender spoiler...yet..
Ive also been busy playing with wiring looms in the engine bay ive got this idea of a hidden loom and weld up any wireing holes not needed in the bulkhead also ive managed to move the fuel lines over to the drivers side for the 16v engine which i bunged in early one morning.

It's miles away from completion but i started to think about paint !.
Ive decided that im going to change it from the blue met to dimond white. I know i know its wrong to do this to a non sunroof storm but i feel its right for me
So the idea is white body with (black gloss maybe stain) window ledges, by doing this it will pick out the alloy trim around the side windows which i think will look rather neat, only problem is im not 100% sure how or if i should carrie this along the top of the front wings. What i have worked out tho is that it will be a very thin line on the top edged corner of the wing.. Maybe a tad difficult to do. Crome bullit mirrors maybe added,or stock ones to stay :?

Thing is if i was taking this car and putting it back to how it rolled of the line id stick with that look. But ive always wanted a 16v mk1 so if im changing the lump i might as well add a few personal touches...

Pick of a hacked out valance to follow ....

Oh i forgot to say ive bagged some 5 spoke speedlines, late 80's rims i belive ?
