Fuel tank cap removal?

Post by KB88 »

I did post in the engine part of the forum before about electrics but it seems as if i may have a problem with the dreaded rust/tank/filler issue.
I've removed the seat but i've got no idea how that cap comes off with the pipes attached!
My car is the 1.6 1988 GT

I've only been working on cars for 2 years, bikes for about 7 years so im pretty competant with what im doing, generally.
I want to clean the fuel system but im a bit unsure about hwere to start from.
Which lines can i 'blow', or clean out?
Also, i have in the past taken the floats out of a motorbike carb and dropped it in boiling water to clean it...is this something i could do with the Scirocco carb?

Thanks

To get the cap off, remove the fuel pipes, turn it anti clockwise. May need tapping with a hammer, use a piece of wood between hammer and cap.
If you have rust problems, I would replace as much as possible with new, particularly the cause.
I would always clean any carb parts with petrol. Fully dismantle the carb and clean all the crap out carefully. You may need to soak some of it for a while.
