Corrugated Plastic Filler Neck

Post by Dutch GT »

Hello everyone,

My first post on here so a quick introduction... The mrs, who is Dutch, hence my log in name, fell in love with the old Scirocco's (who can blame her??) and took the plunge and bought a MkII 1.8 GT. There are one or two areas that need attention so I guess I'll be on here every now and then. We met a few members at GTi International, maybe you remember a lanky bald bloke with a Dutch Mrs...? Anyway...

The first problem is an annoying corrugated plastic filler neck. This was put on when the fuel tank was replaced and I'm guessing it was to save money or hassle as I have read up a bit on this already and understand it's hard to get hold of and is around the £200 mark? My main concern is how safe it is, as it seems to be a bit of a bodge. Has anyone here ever seen this done before? It splashes fuel back a bit too so filling is a pain in the neck (yes, pun intended!!).

I'm wondering if I could get a mate who works at a sheet metal company to make one, but how would the cap fit... anyone tried making their own?
Any advice welcome,

Paul.

I am looking into it at the moment.

See the thread about Filler Necks in the For Sale section

Thanks for that, sounds like a solution. I will keep an eye on the thread. Put me down as interested (1989 MkII GT- must be the later version?).

Only filled up once so far, but noticed that when the locking cap is replaced, and unless you're gentle, the rubber surround gets pushed in. Is this because of the plastic flexi pipe or is there something else missing? I'm guessing that with a metal filler neck, it won't happen?

One more thing... is fitting the stainless steel pipe an easy task for a non mechanic ? I'm capable of following a guide if one is made - hint hint

I'll try to take some pics tomorrow. Do you have a link to the part you mentioned, or part number ?
Cheers.

Ok, here are pics of what is there at the moment:

1. On the surface, all looks good, just need to treat the edges of the filler surround before the rot gets hold.

2. The rubber gasket thing that holds the filler cap can be pushed in easily (and needs a good clean).

3. It looks like the original neck has had its tail cut off (ouch) and a flexi pipe fixed in place. It is only held on by a zip tie (holes drilled through wheel well if that's the correct name).

4. From having a look, I guess it's not too much hassle to do the job myself ? Is the smaller pipe at the top a breather pipe? What does it do, where does it go?
On a learning curve here so some questions may seem daft sorry!

There should be a large metal circlip to hold the rubber gasket in place in the first picture.

The small pipe off the filler is a breather pipe, there should be a plastic shield it goes behind at the front of the wheel arch.

Is that just painted metal in the inner wheel arch in the last picture?

Edit: Don't know if this is any use to you?

DT1 - Ah, mine doesn't have a metal clip, don't suppose that will be easy to get hold of ?

Yes, it is just painted metal. There is half a plastic arch liner on the front edge, didn't think about if this was wrong, should there be a full one? Two halves or has mine been cut?

There seems to be a number of options for the filler neck. The 2nd hand beemer one looks like it has no lock on the cap, could this be swapped? Think I prefer my chances with the GSF pipe as I never get to scrappies. The stainless steel one might be best if the price is reasonable (not my money, the mrs's car!!).

The part no. for the retaining clip is 1H0201255, you could try the dealer first. You never know.

Failing that look in the car breaking section and see if someone can help you out.

The plastic shield is only to protect the pipes so is quite small.

I would try and get the metal in the arch covered in proper sealant (not just black underseal), painted metal won't last long before stone chips allow the rust to get a hold.

The last entry in that thread about the BMW fillerneck seems to indicate a straight swap with the locking cap from the Scirocco, but I would ask MarkH.

Thanks for the part number and advice on the sealant, two priorities there. I'll let you know my progress on the filler neck when I get a chance to sort it, hopefully in a couple of weeks time... on a long journey to collect parts for my golf at the weekend, got my hands full !!

Right. Picked up the Mk1 Golf filler neck as suggested. From reading another post, all I need to do is bend the mounting bracket to fit and cut the pipe down at the tank end, no bending or anything? Just checking, as I don't have the original one to copy the shape off! How does the top end fit into the rubber gasket (I still need the circlip you mentioned). Then find a filler cap of a Mk2 astra... is this lockable?

Cheers, Paul

It's just a push fit for the gasket.

No idea for the Astra cap. Guess it will be if you are lucky enough to find one with a set of keys.
