Hello,
It's been 40k since I've looked at the rear brakes, but the handbrake cable is beginning to stretch so am thinking of taking the drums off to have a look! (Yes, Ant, the new ones we put on with pads etc about 18months ago!). Would peeps advise replacing everything, given the milege?

Four Sciroccos, four gone, but at least I know all parts from most current one went to good homes....

Given the inexpensive price of the parts I would. I would also change the handbrake cables and the brake fluid, about £35-£40 tops I reckon.

it may want shoes replacing - check them for wear, replace if needed. it may want wheel cylinders replacing - carefully pull back the dust cover and check for any sign of fluid leak, replace if needed. replace brake fluid and finally adjust everything up.
bear in mind though, this should be done at every service. so if you do 10,000 miles a year, all of this should have been done at least 4 times over that period. (apart from brake fluid, which should be every 2 years)
