Following Doug Teulie´s advise given to me some time ago, I fitted a pair of Mk1 Goof struts. Now these are more powerful than the Rocco ones, but are still easily available, and over time they will start to lose some of their strength anyway.

On Mk1 Goofs there is just 1 strut attached, so the unit is more powerful than on a Mk1 Rocco, despite the tailgate of a Goof Mk1 being lighter than the tailgate of a Mk1 Rocco.

I fitted some chrome aftermarket Mk1 Golf units, and yes, they are more powerful than the original ones, well the original ones barely managed to keep the tailgate open

I bought some new boot struts from a company called SGS, based in Derby, excellent bit of kit.
There number is 01332 298126, cost me £36.99 posted and fitted perfectly.

I got some Mk 1 struts from ebay usa a while ago. Not sure whether the same company is still on there - hatcharms4less and their part number was 4434 - but I have seen struts on there recently.
