Why is the gear stick curved?
I'm just curious as to why the gear stick on MK2s is curved?

To make it fall more easily to hand in a comfortable driving position.

I've always thought that. Just as I cut an inch or two off.

Hmm..I cut mine right down and I've had a straight piece made, it feels MUCH nicer.

Re: Why is the gear stick curved?
The driving position, including where the gearstick lies, has always been one of the things I most like about driving a Scirocco. I suspect I might be an abnormal shape. The worst car I ever had for driving position was an Alfa 145 - couldn't get comfortable at all, and ended up selling it for that reason. What made it worse was that I'd replaced my first Scirocco with it.

It probably doesn't help that I have to have the seat all the way forward because of my diddy little legs..

Re: Why is the gear stick curved?
Yes, it is a little dependent on posture, I guess, because for me it all just fits perfectly: Seat, pedals, gearstick (curved, not chopped), steering wheel, all ideal for longer trips

I've got to be honest if the car was a daily driver I probabaly wouldn't chop it down down to the whole comfort thing but I always found it easier to use with the quick shift (odd but it worked). May not do it to this one due to the harnesses.

Re: Why is the gear stick curved?
the kink is there to supposedly assist the lhd bias of european/usa cars/drivers.
As most suggest the cars have a pretty good overall driving position however I have added a weighted gear shift to all the cars to cut out the long throw to first/second because of the above mentioned lhd bias.
in this set up i only have an issue if the front passenger seat is in a forward position and my hand knocks the seat when changing gear , another excuse not to carry rear seat passengers...............
