Exhaust/Manifold for a 16v KR

Post by jbo »

Hi All,

On Sunday im picking up an original 16v gtx.

I have a couple of quesions about the exhaust which hopefully you knowing people can answer.

I have a 2.5" jetex system on my gtx im breaking (check out the breaker section ;-p ) which im thinking of putting on the 16v. I know this may of been a slight overkill on a mildly tuned gtx but would this be ok for a 16v? Back pressure wise? The car is pretty standard at the mo. I may start tuning it in the future.

Also what exhaust manifolds to you guys recommend for these engines? Should i go for a one piece system? Just replace the downpipe and keep the orgiginal manifold? Are there 2.5" bore sizes for both of the above options?

Any thoughts, ideas and links are be much appreicated.

Jason

as far as i know the manifold you will have on the gtx is like rocking horses poop. if you buy a replacement they will pretty much be modelled on the rocco manifold so i'd just keep it.

hot tuning do a stainless 16v rocco/mk1 golf conversion manifold but want close to £300 for them bit steep in my mind as I got a 8v one from them for about £180

Hi Von. Yea i've been looking at those for a while. Im a member of the mk1 golf forum and the guy who owns the company gives us discounts. ;-)

I here that janspeed have cleared the dust off their jigs and are doing manifolds for the old vee dubs again. Anyone else hear about this?

The impression im getting is that the original manifold isnt too bad. A different would get me a louder sound but to be honest the exhaust has a nice note to it anyway. Ill leave it how it is for the mo and come back to it another day.

Personly id go for the aftermarket\manifold raceland one or tap up "dub power" (think gtxtra has one). After market manifold will help the engine breathe better, rigged up to the jetex system will give it nice flow. You could do what i did and use the centre section of the jetex system with the 16v standard rear box.

May also be worth taking into account that most headers are designed for lhd as with my 8v one. so may need some modification to stop it setting fire to the steering rack boot thus letting water in to the rack killing it and giving you a bitch of a job to do with the motor still in. Not fun at all.

The company I used to get my 4 branch do custom one off's with lifetime warranties. Everything is built on the car so it all fits perfectly.
Not cheap but you certainly get your money's worth, going up to the barn to have a play today so can grab a couple of pics if you want.
