Leaky boot seals

Post by Tim_R »

With all this rain, my car is doing a fantastic impression of a sieve and letting the water in pretty well anywhere it can. I replace the boot seal a couple of years ago with something I could get off the shelf at my local motor factors, however it has started leaking again and they no longer seem to stock anything useful. It has all gone chav to make money. :ire:

Been looking on the woolies site and not sure which of the top 2 seals in the link would be the closest match to the original sort and hopefully last longer than my current one, anyone able to suggest anything?

http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-38-top-seals.aspx

Cheers.

I'm pretty sure that VW told me it was obsolete when I asked them about it before I replaced my boot seal last time around, hence going to local factors and finding something else.

Re vintage rubber link, seems a tad pricy, £45ish quid plus postage i think and i wasn't certain they could do overseas.

Hey Tim,

VW told me the same story earlier this year but I rang them back and asked them to check again using a different ref no.

Have a look at this thread for the part number:

yup once again definatly not discontinued. I got mine from my local dealer without even using a part number. Some of the guys are really helpful and some are useless (same as anywhere really).

Yup, I did the lock seal about a year ago, probably the only part of my car that doesn't leak currently. That did come from the dealer with no issues at all.

I was trying to make up my mind which out of these 2 options would be the better fit as a replacement.

total height of 22mm with the squashy rubber part being 8mm tall

or

total height of 27mm and rubber O section 13mm

I'm thinking the smaller of the 2 would be the better option.

I'd confirm with VW they're not available. I bought new door seals for an '84 Polo from VW about 2 years ago - they weren't cheap, mind.

i did buy a boot seal from vw last year and robbed me £80. but at least it cured the leak ,as it wrecked my nice pair of rear in phase speakers at the time.
