256mm brake upgrade

Post by the edmundator »

Just wondering if anyone knows the part numbers for the Audi caliper carriers needed for the upgrade? Anyone know if they're available new from the dealer?

lifted from club gti -

Mk1 -> 256mm Brakes
The correct caliper and carriers need to convert your Mk1 to 256mm brakes can be found on :

Audi 80 quattro (83 to 85)
Audi 90 5-cylinder (85 to 87)
Audi Coupe 5-cylinder (85 to 88)
Scirocco 16V (if you can find one !!)

Note:- Pads and Discs from the same vehicles will also be needed. >88 Mk2 16v discs and pads are also compatible with the conversion despite the calipers and carriers not being so.

The specific part numbers for this caliper carriers (if bought new from VAG are):-

Part Numbers:-
Caliper carriers - 853 615 125 (x2)
Carrier bolts - N900 689 02 (x4)
Sliding pin bolts - 321 615 141 (x4)

They are about 120 quid each, I was after new sliders for mine and found that they didn't sell them seperatly. I would have had to get new carriers.

Thanks for the info. Doesn't seem too pricey in the scheme of things. Will look into getting some if I ever get my GTii sold.

I got my new carriers from C&R - considerably cheaper than the Dealer...

i know vauxhall 16v astra calipers fit with some shoulder bolts on mk1's so i assume the same is true of roccos. these can be had much more readily and a damn site cheaper than there audi counterparts then you run vw discs and vauxhall pads. :vcool:

Just getting together a shopping list for the GTL; can anyone tell me if there's any definite cut-off for when smaller (not sure on size) servos were replaced with the larger (apparently 9") items on mk2 sciroccos? My GTL is 1985, I think (C-reg).

I also need to know what parts are required to change to rear discs (same as factory 16v). Cheers.

Rear discs:

Obtained from Mk2 Golf GTi, you need per side:
Stub axle
caliper carrier
caliper
flexy hose
disc
inner and outer bearing kit
thrust washer and nut
pads
Splash plates

Use Scirocco 16v handbrake cables, still available from the dealer or from C&R.

If you want to do the job for completeness also use the handbrake retainer springs and weld a cut down flexy to hardline mount from the mk2 Golf rear axle to the Scirocco axle.

Sorry don't have part numbers to hand Ed.

There is also some debate regarding the brake proportioning valves with rear discs. Some people state that cars running rear discs use different prop valves, other report no difference using the standard Scirocco prop valves that were used with drum brakes.

Thanks, Ant. I found this site in the meantime which, although partly in American, says the same things: http://www.rabbitgtipage.com/Modific/16vbrakes.html

Did 8v mk2 Golf GTis have the rear discs, or just the 16v cars?

I may well have an almost complete set up coming soon as having driven a car with rear discs I can't really tell the difference as I have those whacking great Wilwoods at the front. May also have the Servo as going to play around with just the uprated master cylinder.

They certainly did - my calipers kept sticking! :diablo:
I think mk3 or 4 calipers can be used to avoid this problem.
Seem to remember mr.brown using them on Redroc.
