Ignition problem!

Post by Mk2_phil »

Firstly apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (i did look).

I've got a Mk2 GT ('87) and i was sorting an ICE problem when i went under the bonnet to make sure the power cable for the amp was connected properly, i went back to the car to start the engine to and it doesn't start, the battery, oil and oil temp lights come on, the interior lights and exterior lights work so i don't think its a battery issue. I checked all the earth's in the engine bay and all seem fine. (However in a separate issue the earth wire from the ignition coil isn't connected to anything and i can't see where to attach it! Though this was the case before i tried to fix my ICE and the car started fine.) I've run out of ideas, I've checked the fuse-box and none of the relevant fuses are burned out , the head unit and amp fuses have not blown and the connections to and from these seem fine, so i can't see what i've done haha.

Please help cos i've run out of ideas! And any ideas where the earth to the ignition coil connects would also be helpful.

Thanks

Sounds obvious but have you checked all the plugs on the rear of the fuse box? Had a similar problem myself when I rewired and the Blue (I think) connector had come out. and the fuel pump wouldn't work.

Hi mate, just tried this and no luck, all the connections were firmly attached.

I can't understand what might have caused it cos i've had my amp and sub working in the car no problems for months and fixing the slight problem i had with the amp was a minor deal.

I ran the car yesterday so i'm reluctant to think it might have anything to do with the battery being flat, im generally a bit confused!

flat earth wire from the coil? it should be bolted to the rocker cover. without it there you can get all manor of strange running problems

do i take it that your dash lights up but the engine doesn't even turn, let alone fire? if yes, switch your headlights on. are they bright? leave them on and try to start it, do they go dim? if no, check the starter motor. there should be a small wire (red+black probably) and a big chunky red one. disconnect the little one, then short the 2 connections on the starter with a bit of wire make sure it is in neutral first (little one you just freed up and the big chunky one) if it starts, then it's either your ign switch or wiring at fault. if you said no to anything along the way it's probably your battery
