Anyone know this GTX?

Post by 1lazza »

Just wondered if a GTX I bought new in 1988 has passed through anyone's hands on the register?

Helios blue F680 OLN with Le Castellet wheels. Great car, had to sell it in 1990/18000 miles due to redundancy. Saw it on Ebay earlier this year I think, looked to be in a bit of a state though...but must have some interesting history?

Yes was on ebay last year as I recall. There was something other than the wheels I remember thinking needed doing - a wing dent / rust on the door or a combo of both.

Other than that I think it was ok..

That picture has answered 2 questions that I wanted to know the answer to:

1: Yes 13" steel wheels do fit on a Scirocco.
2: No they don't look as good as I thought they would.

Must accelerate nicely though. I noticed quite a difference when I went from 14" to 15".

If you put the correct tyres on to maintain the same rolling radius you shouldn't notice any difference in acceleration at all. A lot of early mk2s came with 13" wheels - either steel wheels on the likes of the CL, or the "tarantula" Golf GTi wheel. They just have higher profile tyres than you'd get on 14s. Comme ci:

I just went with whatever tyres the tyre place recommended. IIRC the tyres were still in proportion to the wheels so I ended up with a bigger rolling radius. I definately noticed slower acceleration once they 15s were on.

I was thinking of stealing the 13" steels from my/my dads Polo and putting them on the Scirocco (they have small tyres too) to make it a bit nippier, but I'm not sure I like the look now. Might just wang them on when I'm bored one day and have a proper look. Otherwise I think it's 14" steelies!

Just joined the register and am the proud owner of this car.
I can confirm that those wheels did look far too small on the car and had to go mainly due to not being able to get it anywhere near my garage without scraping the pan, It is now on 15 BBS w 205 40 15 toyo proxys. I bought it from a guy in Ipswich off ebay 18 months ago with a knackered drivers seat lowered springs/shocks and a 2l bottom end.
Day 2 of ownership a dodgy foreigner scraped the rear 1/4 leaving a roundabout and had to get chased and threatened to get him to stop.
A week later the jet wash peeled the lacquer off the bonnet. and a mate snapped the cables for the sunroof with his heavy hands. now I'm fixing it as I go, It looks like hell but goes like it too and with the 16v that I have for it it should be fun.
the build plan is simple Collect parts - Make it fast - Make it pretty and being a bit of a California look freak, Clean paint Fat Biscuit interior and stonking motor should be nice!

but will look a bit like this

It was meant to be a cheep run around till I finished the Type 1, Now I have 2 projects and an obsession

61 Type 1 Gasser project
88 Scirocco GTX rolling project
