My RWD MK2 Scirocco Project -

Ok, so last year I bounced the idea around a bit, a few things changed and the plan was nearly scrapped altogether. Friday presented an opporunity, so here we are.

So the basic idea is..Lets make a Scirocco go sideways by converting it to rear wheel drive. This requires a few things, first off is the Scirocco, in the form of a 1991 Scala. The second being a suitable donor car; a.k.a. E36 320i SE. Plenty powerful enough.

The Scirocco as it arrived to me early last year;



Then a few months on;



And as it sits right at this very moment;





As we can see, engines gone, rear everything has gone, fuel tank, exhaust..Just about everything has gone.

And here we have a few shots of the donor car.



I did get it tested and drive it around for a total of 5 days before this happened (which has re-started the RWD Scirocco project)

Next job's on the list are to get the propshaft, gearbox and engine out of the BMW. That's thursday and fridays task. After that, we start mocking up, test fitting, cutting and grinding away at the Scirocco until it all fits :D :D

Ok, photos in the next few days.

Progress so far, working on the Sciroccos rear subframe, boot floor has been cut out and I've started work on the subframe for the rear diff. Working on the rear suspension, modifying the shock absorbs and doing some sums to get the right amout of lbs in the springs. The wishbones will be bolted up soon, I've got the tabs, they need welding on, and I've4 also started making a load of polybushes for the rear end.

Hopefully should have it back on it's wheels in a few days time :D

Not a lot of progress, but i've been bust with college work as the year is coming to an end soon..Most of the work at the minute is going into getting the trailing arms/wishbone things sorted..Be reete' though!

Watching with interest

Just out of curiosity what you doing about the steering rack being right where I imagine the engine will end up?

Progress is mega slow at the minute, though I think I want the engine in and it on it's wheels sometime this year

As for the steering rack, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it..Though the Scirocco engine bay has more room either side than the BMW did as the suspension turrets are smaller, to I think an extra universal joint at the top to shift the whole lot to the side by 2/3inches might do. Failing that, I'll make one.

Not the column, the rack - runs side-to-side, mounted quite high up on the bulkhead (right where the back of the block will end up?). It's position being pretty critical to the suspension/steering geometry...

Would think that's a very significant bridge not to be worrying about.

It's not that I'm not worried about it, just, working on getting the back end sorted first. After all, theres no point fitting the engine if I can't get the power to the wheels.

Speaking of which, rear subframe is finished, brackets are welded to the car. I'll update with photos asap.

shame that, would have been ncie for some guidance haha, although the mate that'll do the majority of the work already builds 600hp+ drift cars and worryingly already had it all planned out when we talked about it over a beer last night.

Well, 4 bar rear link onto a capri bear beam, custom drive shaft, R380 or LT77 gearbox from an SD1/triumph with a 3.9 rover V8 running on EFI.

OR

4 bar rear link onto a capri rear beam, custom drive shaft, BMW E36 325 gearbox, custom adaptor for gearbox (already made at a mates workshop for this purpose), VR6 engine mounted longitudinally.

VR be a more costly option by about 800 pounds due to the custom adaptor to let it take the bmw gearbox, but will return a good 25-28mpg whereas V8 will return 10-20mpg. but then i'd have a V8 powered scirocco drift mobile....
