Hi guys
I’m having trouble finding a replacement exhaust (front section) for my 1992 1.8l.
My mechanic reckons the number is 783-263. Euro Car Parts told me the part number is 171253091A but they can’t get hold of one anymore.
eBay has one which mentions both those part numbers but says it’s incompatible with my car. It lists an 89 Scirocco as compatible though.
My mechanic gets well moody with my car cluttering up his workshop while he tries to find parts, so I have to make sure I give him the right bits.
This is the eBay listing - I’m wondering if the compatibility issue might just be an eBay glitch. Please can anyone confirm whether this is the right part for the 92 Scirocco? Thanks

Be clear - e.g - Mk1 Bumper clips, Mk2 filler neck - 55l tank, Mk2 wiper motor (single wiper) - you get the drift?

Re: Mk2 exhaust downpipe
I believe its the right part, it's also worth getting some new C clips as they do stretch over time.

I was under the impression that the first 2 parts of the exhaust is the same as a Mk1 Golf cabriolet, the back box is different.

Maybe someone else will chip in and check if I'm right as I don't have a Mk2 Scirocco at my home..?

Re: Mk2 exhaust downpipe
looks the same as what ive got sat in back of my roccos... i bought 2 downpipes as they suffer most from standing...
Rosie.....your location says brighton, surely your mechanic can nip down to vw heritage....BN43 6PB only 2 mins away from the powerstation. (i built it)

Thanks lads
Good tip re the clips Mark, thanks.
Kdc169 - I think my mechanic is sick to death of my car, he won’t be nipping anywhere for me after a month-long driveshaft debacle last year. VWHeritage didn’t have the exhaust last time I checked, but I’m in there fairly often! I know the power station well - surely you didn’t build ALL of it?!

Re: Mk2 exhaust downpipe
yes i did.... i had 2000 helpers.
At the time i didnt have a vw...i was vauxhall man, has 1.9tdi astra, and vectra gsi.
I spent 2 yrs in worthing, then moved on to coryton (had 406 v6 coupe there)
Anyhow.... even with a bad exhaust a mechanic should be able to manipulate it to fit... sounds to me you need a new garage. The customer shouldn't need to find parts for unless they want no longer available OEM or something specific.

Re: Mk2 exhaust downpipe
I haven’t had a lot of luck with mechanics. My usual one specialises in old VWs, but he can be a little temperamental. I’ve tried to find another but it always ends up with them keeping hold of the car for two weeks and then telling me they couldn’t fix it, or putting the wrong part in for £400 which then falls out causing another £400 worth of damage! I’m sticking with the VW guy now - at least he knows what he’s doing, even if he isn’t keen on hunting out the parts.
Having said that - I’d be happy to have recommendations in the Brighton area!
Exhaust is on its way today so hopefully it will all be sorted soon. Thanks for the help. I don’t know what I’d do without the forum.

Re: Mk2 exhaust downpipe
It can be a problem finding a good garage as lot of them are just trained using a laptop and relying on the car telling them what’s wrong with it and then just fit new parts until it’s fixed instead of fault finding and trying to fix the broken part...
I’m just glad after over 20 years of playing with my car and reading/asking for help on the forums I can usually fix any problems and my car only goes to the garage for a MOT test
