Grinding sound?

Hello!

Just after some advice with my first post here So, I have a 1991 VW Scirocco GTII which I have bought as a project car. My first job was to replace both inner and outer CV Joints on both driver and passenger side to resolve a wobble/knocking sound and feel whilst driving; which has worked as intended.

However, that's where the fun stops, because since doing this there is now a metal grinding/rubbing sound coming from the front left (sounds like left) when driving over ~10 MPH.

I have a feeling it's the wheel bearing because they are likely to be original parts still, but I'm just curious if anybody had has this or a similar issue or maybe could advise what the noise could be? I have check all around the brakes to see if they are rubbing but they are not, the wheels are not rubbing on the coilovers so I am a little bit lost with this one!

Any advise is appreciated.

Hi Vince,
Have you jacked up the front wheels and spun them, you may hear grinding?? Try holding top and bottom of the wheel and push pull opposing sides to feel for movement. Worth a shot.

Definitely worth trying the above checks, it could be as simple as the brake back plate touching the disc or a small stone stuck between them.

I have jacked the car up and there is no movement vertically, but there is very, very minimal movement horizontally in the wheel when pulling the wheel side to side.

Would this symbol an issue of a wheel bearing, perhaps?

There's very little movement, if any on the front wheel bearings until they need replacing. However, they usually give plenty of notice when they start to need replacement with the noise progressively more noticeable.
Worth checking the rears too, wheel bearing noise can tend to resonate around the body. The rears should have a small amount of movement/play.
