Scirocco R32 fuel tank

Post by R32 james »

I’ve got a 1988 Scala (carb engine) it’s got the 55 litre fuel tank which leaks anyway so need to replace. Will a mk1 golf gti 40 litre fit? They come with the internal swirl pot so will ideal for the r32 engine. Here a link of the tank on eBay pretty sure it will fit just want to be sure before I buy it.

It looks quite different from the one i put in the gtx

The scirocco is based on the mk1 platform so it should be possible. Surely the r34 will be 4wd so the tank will fould the prop

I imagine that it would. I believe the only difference is the size of the spare tyre.

But personally, i'd stick to the 55 litre

I’d keep the 55ltr tank. But adapt it to take a later in tank fuel assembly from a 20vt

Think you would need an in tank original lift pump for this to work correctly.

I’ve just ordered a intank lift pump and Bosch 044 pump and the 55l tank just not sure if I will still need a swirl pot or not?

I think in the long run you’d be better off with one. I have thought about making a tube for the in tank pump to sit in to act as a baffle. Obviously it would need slits or holes in it or simple 1 way flap valves to allow fuel in, the sender unit may get in the way though.

been googling and some people have put the plastic practice golf balls in their fuel tank to baffle it, seen another with plastic tubes cut about 3" long dropped in. bit odd but would work if they dont block your fuel pick up, or melt in the plastic.

what were you using in the mk1 golf?
surely the same setup would work as they're similar?

The mk1 was a gti so just used the stock gti setup.

i would use a swirl pot like your previous setup had in that case, no sense changing a winning recipe.
i wouldn't risk leaning out round a corner on an r32 especially as its going to be fuel hungry.
