Running them Daily

Post by fev1983 »

I have a half decent mk2 gt that I don’t use very often,,now it’s only been sat a couple of months but now fuel ain’t getting through and every time I leave it for a while there seems to be an issue..
So I’m thinking of using it daily..
I work on a farm so I would be washing it almost every day.
So do you guys that run your scirocco daily find it ok????
Cheers
Danny

Don’t bother washing it every day, just use it. My Mk1 Golf cabriolet is a daily (same floor pan and running gear as Mk2 Scirocco) I give mine a good clean before the winter and a good clean after the winter when I say good clean I mean get a hose and wash out underneath the wheel arches and get all the mud out of the lip around the rear wheel arch and get you arm up inside the wheel arch and clean the fuel filler neck so no mud is stilling on top of it. The fronts of the cars are pretty good for keeping the rust away.
Check for any stone chips when cleaning and put a little bit of paint on them to stop them rusting.

Regular service and keep on top of any little things that pop up and you should have a reliable car, mines never let me down in 20 odd years of driving older water cooled VWs.

i used to use mine everyday and it only let me down on 2 occasions
1- alternator belt snapped and it overheated
2- headgasket let go when i was on the isle of wight
both time it was a cheap repair and back on the road the next day (not something you can do with most modern cars!)

if you get yourself a half decent wash n wax and wash it fortnightly you wont have any rust issues.
i found (like you are now) the more i used mine the better it was.

Not so much a Scirocco but I do use my Mk2 Golf Auto as a daily driver and I've been recovered once for a broken accelerator pedal bush. I do have a MK2 Scirocco and I'm planning on using it as a daily next year. I'd wash and wax the car before using it. Don't worry about the muck on the farm, it will build up protective layer of its own.

if your going to need to wash it regularly then it might also be a good idea to wax over the brake lines and ferrules as well as other fittings under the car.
get it up on a ramp and waxoyle the floor paying special attention to the wheel arches

Been running mine daily since I've had it - 21 years now & I keep her on the driveway at home. To be fair it's only a short run to work & back so I give her a blast into Bristol occasionally as well.

As above,

Don’t bother washing it every day, just use it.
Power hose the rear arches and as you are working on a Farm and I would replace the fuel filler neck now with a stainless steel one.

My old White GTII only let me down due problems associated with the filler neck and was my daily for over 15 years.

I still use mine all the time but it has been in the driveway due to the snow. Couldn't live with myself if I crashed it in the ice.

Just keep it serviced, change your fuel filter and keep motoring.

The missus uses her 92 GTII as her daily - 24 miles a day commute.
