Which 6x4s? Also wire question.

Post by 00mike00 »

I noticed on eBay they are several types of JBL 6x4s. I wanted to make sure I get the right ones for my Mk2 GTX.
Could someone link me to them and could you tell me if the original wiring will be fine for just general use.
I'm guessing they are the same for front and back?

Thanks

while you have the door cards off it would allways be a good idea to upgrade the speaker cable.
while your at it a new live feed from the battery to the stereo wouldnt go amiss either.

Most people use Alpines these days and, yes, they are the same front and rear.

These are what I've got and it seems a popular choice for others as well.
Sound wise, nice clear sound but as you can imagine for a speaker of this size they do lack a little bass, a sub in the boot will sort that problem out. :-D

If you can upgrade the speaker wire as the factory fitted stuff is now old and properly starting to break down especially between the car and door where it gets moved every time you open the door. On the speaker they take 1 normal size spade connector and 1 small spade connector.

Being that the car is very good inside, it's been looked after, the wiring looks spot on...like new. Is that no indication that it's still good? I'd just rather not strip it out if it's good. I'll take a look at that live feed though.

Thanks for all the replies guys. And thanks for the links.
Those alpines are reasonably priced to.
I had a great Sony head unit in my last car with USB slot. Do you use something similar or not?
Obviously I'll be keeping the original radio cassette!

i have an ipod compatible alpine head unit and preamp cd player with usb in the side.
the wiring might look good but its age and the flexing at the door hingde like mk1gls pointed out that causes the issues which is why i would change it all while you are fitting the speakers

Hi guys,
Last month I bought the first set of speakers for the car, a pair JBL’s. They fit perfectly into the rear speaker recesses but the centre tweeter is raised above the sub. Is there a pair which this lies flush or below? I want the speaker covers to fit on afterwards.

Not 100% sure but try fitting the speakers below the shelf and the grill fits on top of the shelf so giving you some gap between the 2?

Ok I will try that when I fit them. I guess with the doors I will have to put it inside the door car, as apposed to outside?

Yes, you can try mounting behind the doorcards, too.

If that doesn't work, these Alpines should fit and are usually available for around £30/pair.

Thanks. I saw on the PDF the tweeter protrudes still but I think I will just have to make adjustments for any of these to fit.
