Headlight flash

Post by M4ttyf »

Hi guys and gals I'm new to scirocco ownership and have a mk2 gt and it only flashes main beam if the headlights are on my question is, is this normal for roccos or are they supposed to flash as and when you want them regardless of whether the lights are on or not

You should be able to flash at any time as far as I am aware.

yes they are supposed to flash with or without the headlights on but its quite common for the contacts to bend or burn out on the stalk making them difficult to flash.
i replaced mine with a good set of stalks because of this reason.

When you say they only flash if the headlights are on, do they stay on high beam when you select it?
Are you sure that your dip beams are working?
I have just pulled my GTX out of the garage, after 7 or 8 months off the road, and checking round it pre-MOT (which is today), I found that I could only flash high beam (whether the ignition was on or off and headlights on or off), and it would not select high beam constantly.
However, neither of my dipped beams worked.
After checking bulbs, fuses, headlight switch, main/dip/flasher switch, trying a different x-contact relay, switching ignition on and off, it worked properly, but only occasionally.
Much head scratching and ignition on and off later - the problem boiled down to a faulty ignition switch not keeping contact with the x-contact relay circuit.
Fitting a spare ignition switch, solved the problem. That is the good news.
The bad news is that you have to remove the steering wheel, the switch stalks and the steering lock and ignition key housing, in order to get to the ignition switch!
