Scirocco mk2 engine swap recommendations

Post by Rocco2 »

Hi guys,

Found a scirocco with really well preserved body and interior. But the poor 1.8 8v injection engine is busted and old. Kind a thinking of replacing it with bit more decent power or lifetime at least.

The thing is that where I live (Estonia) we can modify/swap the engine IF we can use the existing engine mounts. Otherwise it's going to be a pita to get it legalised.

Plan would be to get a donor VW "something" to get all whats needed.

Big question is! What are my possible engine options? Have googled for a week now and one site says one thing and the other completely different thing. So no modification to the engine mounts...

Hints would be: Easy swap, DIY project, best bang for buck and etc.

My scirocco is 1992, 1.8 8v with injection.

Really hope to get some good ideas.

The Mk1 golf is the same as Mk2 Scirocco so have a read here.

http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/index.php?page= ... misc&id=26

Starting with cheapest and easiest without the need to touch your original engine mounts.
1. Another 1.8i 8v
2. 2.0l bottom end (Mk3 Golf etc) use you original head etc.
3. 1.8 16v or 2.0 16v
4. G60 engine
5. 2.0 20v turbo (most work but most power available)
Don't think about VR6 as you really need to chop and mess with engine mounts.

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Would it be a option to keep the lower part of the engine and change the upper part. As I understood my mechanic, the k-jetronic (which I have now) is a no go but the lower part should be quite common and reliable.

If this would be the thing then which upper part would you guys choose?

Trying to think all possibilities through before pulling it apart.

I am in the middle of a engine build. I am using the 2.0 bottom from a passat (ADY). and will be using the head from my 1,8. Complete with k-jet. Will also install knocksensor, just to be safe. And have converted to serpentine belt.

Hi guys!

Did a lot of googleing and there is quite many options but didn't get all the answers.

I don't want to keep the k-jet since it is bad shape and when it blows it's going to be expensive to fix.
I'm still struggling get my head around the different heads. Specially which one to prefer and which ones to avoid.

So here's an idea:
Audi 80 2.0L 8v aka "Bubbleblock" [engine code 3A] which should fit nicely BUT what head to use?
Originally it also uses CIS-E.

Any thoughts?
