ok so got it home now it all starts , 18 years after the first 1



unfortunately this side of the world parts are hard to come by , but have fam in uk so will get sorted somehow ,
luckily this side we dont have mot and the like so can do pretty much anything

will keep simple just have to get the last project out and do some mudding , fj62 cruiser on a 80 series vx chassis with 1gz fe 5l v12 and some big mud tyres , then the wife will only let me tackle the vdub.

At least you can use the Land Cruiser's headlights on your Scirocco (same Hella part as early mk2 Sciroccos).

thx nice catch , 1 of the scirocco's headlights is a bit crusty ,
biggest problem i have is the dash and door cards front and rear went in for trimming and the guy disappeared

did check on lights no go , mine is similar to the passat cli that was sold this side in the 80's ( bigger headlight with the smaller spot ) , the side mirrors are also identical , well picked up the wheels and coilovers today not bad at our exchange rate 630 pounds for 17 bbs with 205/40/17 rubber and full set of coilovers from maxtrack

did manage to get some bits and bobs , big thx to stephan clarke , gee beats and james butler ,
got the new coilovers and new boots ( 17 bbs as my old mk1 had 15 bbs on )
only because the wife sent me on my own to fetch her wheel for the audi , after a whole week after i put a new set of 18's on for her and whacked a pavement , not her fault just some stupid bugger on a phone that pushed her of the road ( this is where i wish she would drive my cruiser and just push them back without batting an eyelid , and prob no damage , but little ones in the car so a cool head prevailed )
did get a local black friend to do the seats / door cards / rear cards and dashboard in genuine leather ( seeing as bmw and merc do a lot this side the tans are very good ) for around 200 pounds
the only issue now is a flippin windscreen

was thinking of going 20v turbo , but after rebuilding the wifes b7 , just thought nope stick with the 8 valve apk , even though i used an apk sub to rebuild the bfb motor on the audi ( 1 hole to drill and tap m14 for the water feed to turbo ), luckily i have a machine shop so the guys machined the pistons that even if the belt breaks there is no interference and bent valves as is the norm on the 20v , and the 2l to 1.8 even on std ecu made a big diffs . just had a shocker when removed box and found no sump or filter so booked in to audi for gearbox service. not used to working on an auto with no torque convertor , business partner woke me up and told me nope that is how it drives seeing as he has the new a5 3l tdi quattro

luckily there are aftermarket driver side mounting brackets for the bfb motors so will work perfect on the apk motor , i think will look good with the standard black plastic cover over the motor just cleans the bay up nicely.
if i can get the same performance as my old mk1 i will be over the moon , it did pretty well considering it dragged an e36 m3 butt up to 200kph then i was on rev limiter then he only caught me , but standing start to 800m i was in 5th gear pulling limiter.
but thinks i will leave standard as 8 years back with a mazda ( ford as badged here ) half ton ldv as you call it , 2l 16 valve with stonking turbo ( over 320kw and 450nm on the wheels ) i utterly destroyed it so lucky to be here . so taking it easy and doing the sunday drives , hyudai h100 with lexus lx 430 motor and ford ranger 3.2 cab and a half as daily drives.

picked up the aftermarket ecu for the motor , locally developed and works a treat , map sensor , 60-2 or what ever you want to program , tps , engine and air temp compensation , semi sequential injection , idle control whether throttle body based or 2 wire standalone , lambda input , rad fan control , overtemp protection , rev limiter ( soft or hard ) , launch control , boost limiter , dual map control , built in coil drivers no need for tp100 modules , the works and for all of 130 quid with harness , ok you must use your old plugs but have used these on the lexus range of v8 with great success , even the 5 speed auto , just fitted one to my brother in laws 2.7 twin turbo audi and runs like heck , albeit its in an old 50 series audi , and small enough to tuck up anywhere , and nice thing the software is free

at least no battling with the standard ecu and all it daft sensors , limp mode and what not

got this setup today , a kit that brings the clutch cable completely out of the cabin and it then runs straight in line with the bulk head , less stress and makes for an easier clutch , vw south africa fitted them from around 2004 onwards to eliminate the cable pulling through the bulkhead. cost around 36 pounds linkage and cable included ( 020 type gearbox )

then the pesky hydraulic belt tensioner removal kit for the 2l 8valve apk motor ( or 20v bfb ) easier to do the driver side mounting , frees up a few extra holes on the block



managed to pick from vw south africa on special brand new sideshafts both sides complete for 2k ( around 90 pounds )

but been checking on the local vw club and seems the hyundai accent power steering rack will fit with a small mod for gearbox linkage

will fit a custom aircon system ( definately needed this side of the world , if i can get my guys to custom build one for a 1974 lancruiser bj40 the scirocco should be a doddle ) seeing as the apk motor has power steering pump and aircon pump , might as well put to good use

Wow - nice project! Will be excited to see the updates.

The clutch cable conversion kit is very interesting. Hadn't heard of that before. Does the bracket mount next to the existing bulkhead hole? I guess there would be a rod going from the clutch pedal to the bracket then? And does the cable just run along the bulkhead over to the gearbox arm, or is there a second bracket?

thomas , yip the kit comes with the arm that goes through original hole in the firewall to link with bracket , the arm with the hole lines up with the original and brackets sits horizontal.

will post some pics as my car is circa1982 and has a butchered firewall as is the norm for that age

just picked up new driveshafts from vw , complete both sides total 90 pounds

ok went this morning hangover and all and picked the clutch kits for the guys , the wife let me go on my own so i did manage to get these while she was not with me , if not with me cant stop me. lol

tried to repair the old calipers and it was just not going to work
rear set - 100 pounds
front set - 52 pounds
poly kit for complete car - 110 pounds

i am putting prices in because maybe that side they might be dirt cheap for you guys , or i can be paying through my nose

did get final quote on upholstery - seats front / rear , door cards , rear cards , dashboard - all in leather with the seats / door panels having a suede insert, roof lining - 300 pounds

well if i take in our money it works out to 6500 rand , normal cloth would be around 4500 rand . leather is relatively cheap this side ,

dont know why i did this to myself this morning shiiite the wife is going to kill me ( but i suppose i can blame her she said i must buy it ) my daughters b7 audi turbo only cost R100 000-00 , she is def not going to get the password for this forum , the look on her face aint going to be priceless ,

and i still have to chuck R30 000-00 at my hyundai h100 truck to finish off and another R80 000-00 at the monster landcruiser( tyres alone are R25000-00 ) looks like i will have to sell it to keep the peace but i would like to do another trip with it last one was a while ago but albeit in a landy which i thought we had built to handle this trip but did not fair well and got ragged by the toyota guys so i started to build the cruiser that i always wanted , but trip was unbelievable on the border between south africa and namibia , trip was a total of 3800km and absolutely no cellphone reception for at least 150km utter bliss - link is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRtNWM4ai2Y my mugshot is at 3m35s behind the trailer that bombed - 9m28s sitting in the chair having a cold one , - 9m33s the only bald bloke in the crowd , she is going to banish me to the ford 1/2 ton ldv , probably will take my ford ranger 3.2 away ( would not be surprised if she flogs the thing ) , and i told her i would not spend on the rocco until they are finished , now just have to hide some paperwork in the study , oops sorry babe , i thinks while she is out with our daughter and mom maybe i should go to the pub and have a few to build up the courage to tell her , nothing like a pissed off redhead afrikaaner wife .
