Re: Scirocco GTX not starting
Shouldn't be any issues with anew relay. Pop the new one in and turn the ignition on but don't start. Listen for the pump priming and if it does job done.
It is always worth checking the rear of the fuse box to ensure there is no water damage as these cars are old and most leak some water (rain) via the windscreen seal. Corrosion on the back of the fuse box can short stuff out.
I would think we have all changed the relay at some stage.
As a test you can bridge the relevant terminals where the relay goes in with a wire, have a search to see how.

The relays are known to give up without there being another problem. Mine did in my Scala and has been fine since I fitted the new relay.

Re: Scirocco GTX not starting
To check the fuel pump is still working remove the fuel pump relay and then remove the relay underneath it and fit it in the place where the fuel pump relay fits, you may need to turn it round to fit. This should make the fuel pump run as soon as you turn on the ignition with out the car running, you should be able to start the car and get it to run.
The side of the road fix is get a chunky bit of wire and short out the 2 bigger connections this will make the fuel pump run even with out the ignition on so don't let the pump run for long without the car running, I got home like this when my relay failed on the way home from work, glad I had a spare bit of wire in my glove box!
