Heres a a brief intro.
Bought this motor in 2009. Drove it for about a year and then gave it to my dad as it was unreliable and costing a fortune in insurance.
Since then its served as a daily workhorse and was then unceremoniously dumped in a damp garage in July.
I had some issues with my car (ie. 6 blown engines and a new shell) so I need a daily. Enter my old mk2 GTII.
Took me and my dad a weekend to get it started. It had a dodgy battery, dodgy terminals, the dizzy cap wouldn't stay in place and the alternator is a bit shit.

The car is now being used daily and between this and my MX5 drift project progress is going to be slow. So far its had a new battery and a fuel filter. It needs a new rocker cover gasket, battery terminals, leads, alternator, shocks, rear shoes, OSF wing. Boot lid needs treating for rust and needs a deep clean inside.

It does have some good bits though. It's running a Weber 32/34 carb, vinyl sunroof and smoked front indicators from one of my old sciroccos. Wheels are pretty much brand new as I bought them for my dad last Christmas just before he told me he'd bought a new car and didn't need them. Bonus for me.

Always a nice feeling to get back from work to see a box full of new car parts.
Nothing overly exciting, but very necessary. They'll be fitted over the weekend provided nothing goes wrong.


Last weekend we had the rear wheels off and found a leaky wheel cylinder. No point putting the new shoes on just yet. So the plan for this weekend is to change the cylinder, fit new shoes, fit new discs on the front, new rocker cover, oil and filter change, hoover and clean the interior, fix the light in the speedo and put the spaces back on that we forgot to put back last weekend and hopefully put a stop to the horrible noises that you get when you have the wrong offset wheels on your car. aaand breath.

Things I need help/advice/parts on:
Whatever the clips are called that hold the boot cover on. The bits that attach to the pole.
Also, the bulbs on the front indicators are painted, yes painted, red because my dad refused to buy new ones when they failed the MOT. Apparently they're not the normal halfrauds variety as they have two connections?
Need the diameter of the breather hose that goes from the expansion tank to the rad.
And finally, RamAir have a bolt on air filter for the Weber 32/34 DMTL, has anyone run one? Can't seem to find any mention of them on the forum.

Parcel shelf clips? The bits that clip into the hole next to the rear speakers? Obsolete now but there are a few threads with alternatives if you use the Search. Here's one -

I don't know what you mean about two connections? A standard bayonet type (P21W) bulb should fit. You just make need to make sure the bayonets are 180 degrees opposite not offset. Maybe Halfords only sell the offest ones? You can get chrome ones on ebay that flash yellow.

finally, RamAir have a bolt on air filter for the Weber 32/34 DMTL, has anyone run one? Can't seem to find any mention of them on the forum.

Never heard of a RamAir one but K&N did a bolt on one - I think it gives a nice noise but makes the carb more prone to freezing in winter and to sucking up warm engine bay air (potentially reducing performance).

The ones with 2 connections have 2 filaments and are type 381 bulbs, you want type 382, single filament and, as mentioned, pins 180° opposite and no offset.

Edit: looked it up, you want 382 BA15S bulbs.

382 bulb is white, looking at the picture above the car is fitted with aftermarket indicators so will need coloured bulbs. Can you get the 382 bulb in yellow?

Thanks guys. The indicators arrived a week ago, haven't seen them yet as I haven't been home. Haven't had chance to get any work done, driving to work in the pitch black black and pouring rain, and repeating the process on the way back. Got a chance today on my day off to sort the wing out that my dad "repaired" last year.

Obviously I won't be working in a body shop anytime soon, but not bad for a days work. It's getting vinyal wrapped to make it a bit more interesting.

Gave it a much needed wash today, its last wash was in 2010 when I had it last.
Pulled the GTII badges off, don't like the yellow and black.
Gonna have to sort the wheels out too, they came on another Rocco I bought and they were fine, but on this car ive had a few problems. The centre bore is for a Vauxhall which is .5mm smaller than VW ( or so the internet tells me) so getting them off is a nightmare, they seem to weld themselves on. The wheel weights are also catching something on the back and I've got a grinding noise coming from the front on right turns.


Definitely forgot how much work it is owning a dub. On the plus side the rainy nights gave me time to put this together for my mx5

I'm pretty sure the VW and Vauxhall CB is the same - 57.1mm. It may be that the hub protrusion has a different profile - tapered vs radius - as I have a similar issue with my wheels (which were designed for an Opel).

Your grinding and wheel weight issue will most likely be because the Vauxhall wheels have a higher offset, i.e. sit inboard more.

Could you not care fully grind a little of the wheel and a little copper grease may help?

Took the front wheels off, only took an hour per wheel this time. There is (was) a lip on the inside that stuck out about 2mm. Ground that down with one of those flappy sanding wheel drill bits and a bit of copper grease to put then back on.
New front disks and pads on the front. Changed the indicator bulbs. Passenger side was fine, there is one connection for the bottom of the bulb, but the drivers side has two connection where the bulb has one. They
work but I'm wondering if its going a short at some point.

Also tried to take the wing off and got stuck, removed all the top bolts (also detached it from the gluey gunk that attaches it at the top), the one behind the indicator, unscrewed all the arch liner bits, and the two behind the pop out circular covers but I couldn't figure out how to get the ariel out. How do I access it? It's broken so its not needed anyway.

You need to remove the plastic inner liner. This then enables you to access the ariel mounting up at the back of the wing.

Cheers. Took that out today, saw how thick the sealant was on the a pillar and changed my mind. Pulled the ariel out anyway, ill repace it someday. Did the wrap with the wing on, plenty of bubbles and creases in it, but with the pattern its harder to see them. Ignore the sunstrip.


I'm sure most of you will hate it, but that's OK.

Mx5 is starting to come together though.
