handbrake cables (disk conversion)

Post by james butler »

ok so ive fitted mk3 gti rear disks, calipers and gubbins but i need some handbrake cables that will fit the mk3 caliper and fit into the scirocco hand brake mech.
ive searched the forum and what commonly comes up is people saying the 16v handbrake cables will fit but only if you use the 16v scirocco rear calipers.
any one have any other recommendations and where to get them from?

I used the polo GTI rear disc setup, I don't know if this is similar at all to the mk3 ones but I used 16v scirocco cables and they're spot on, you have to route them different though as they're not as long

To do it properly you should get brackets for the brake hoses that you have to drill in to your rear axle. Available from Europe or VW Vortex. The 16 v handbrake cables are too short for the mk3 golf conversion. They will work but would not pass an mot here in NI. You can buy from C and R enterprises cables, part number CHAN171CR designed for the job but very expensive. Or you can buy Mk 4 golf cables, and trim the brake cable housings and they work just as well. 16 v cables are too short. You have very limited adjustment and your brake performance is crap when you want to use the handbrake for a corner or for stopping without getting noticed!

cheers whiteshark i have the brackets for the hoses.
the mk4 cables, do you trim the outer liner to make the inner cable reach the handbrake lever?
