garage security

Post by james butler »

i have a rented garage with an up and over door and im not happy with the standard security.
i have spoken to the landlord and hes happy for me to fit added security locks, however ive been scouring the market and i have no clue what would be a good lock for this type of door.
so what security devices would you guys recommend?
ideally i dont want anything bolted to the floor as the car scrapes in and out of the garage so clearance would be an issue.
or do you think money spent on the actual car would help instead?
i have thought though that the added security might attract attention as the others havent bothered with security and mine would stand out!
so something discreet would be best i think.
i really wanted a disklok that covers the whole steering wheel but places like halfords and argos have stopped selling them :-(

Or you can always buy them direct (every now and then they discount them):

http://www.disklokuk.co.uk/shop/disklok/

It looks like they will do a group discount if you can find >=10 people who want one.

Why not fit something like a bar across the door opening on the inside which you have to remove before driving out ?.

So you see nothing on the outside, and when you open the door they can not drive out the car?.

My most remote garage - came with one of those full fat defenders already fitted. I use a disklock on that car too.
I've added an Autolok 'garage stoppa' to another remote unit - the garage door set up precluded the use of traditional hasps or lockable bolts. I use a steering lock on that car too and might add the clamp that I had used on it when parked outdoors until recently.

If you're able to drill have a think about setting a heavy duty anchor into the ground and using a large chain via a tow hook.

last year i had my garage broken into and funnily enough the only thing taken was my 3 ton garage jack ( 2 days old ) car, tools and everything else all untouched .... since this happened i have had a garage defender fitted resulting in no attempts since.....highly recommended :-D

i fitted 2 shackles and big padlocks to each side of the up and over door about 450mm from the top of the door. I spray painted them badly black to make them less new and shiny. cost less than a tenner all in, but would take a fair bit of work to get in now and more importantly get anything out. you would basicall have to fold the door in half!

this one. flappy bit fitted to frame, other bit to door, bolted through to metal plate on other side

My mate had a Defender on his garage and it stopped some thieving toerag nicking his BMW GS1200. Has been tested by bike mag's as well as official bodies and is highly rated.
Put something on the car as well.

I can recommend a tk03 tracker. I got one off eBay for £20. Put in a pay as you go sim card. When ever the ignition is turned on it texts my phone.
