Best immobiliser / alarm (also to control central locking)

Post by mjmaster10 »

Any recommendations for which system is best suited for retrofitting to the Scirocco?

Thank you!

I think the AI 606 Toad looks pretty good. Does anyone know of any mobile fitters that cover the Croydon area? The old Cobra immobiliser (dating from the earty 1990s by the looks of it) has permanently immobilised the vehicle and I can't get it started! Battery is fully charged.

I think an upgrade is definitely due...

if you can find the immobilizer brain and trace where all the wires go you can pull the immobilizer out quite easily to get the car running. ive had to do this in the past quite a few times.
all the imobiliser does is disconnect some important wiring in the car to prevent it running. all you have to do is find where the imobiliser wiring breaks into the origenal car wiring then cut out the imobiliser and rejoin the origenal bits back together.
for example a common mod is to cut the coil low tension wiring then extend the wires into the car and connect it to a switch. when the switch is off there is a break in the coil wiring meaning no spark. the imobiliser does pretty much the same thing but not just the coil wiring, it may be tapped into the starter wring and even the fuel pump wiring if its a gti.
if you can get it running and everything working after ripping out the imobiliser you will save money on the next alarm install as the technician who will fit it wont have to spend time ripping the old one out.

Croydon wise - give Reuben at Tuningwerkes a call - http://www.tuningwerkes.com/about.php
Known him for 20 years, if he can't do it in workshop he will know someone local who can. Tell him Sean sent you.

Iirc you can open up the brain and just bridge the switch side of a couple of big relays to kill the immobiliser permanently. Obviously you'd need to tell your insurer you had done this.

But yeah, fit a toad.

But don't rely on it, I had a toad ai606 in my old evo 1, and one morning I came out of my house to find my toad on the floor with a pile of smashed glass and a space where my car had been!! I would recommend a removable steering wheel or a disk lok etc as well to properly deter thieves.

I've used Hawk alarms in the past which have been very reliable. They offer a whole range of models inc top category insurance approved versions.

Hi everyone - New to the forum & first post!

I've just bought a Mk2 rocco with a 1.8t (APX) conversion running qpeng management.

First thing I'd like to do is get a secure Thatcham C1 alarm system (looking at a Toad AI606 as advised here) but need some more advice considering that the engine and ECU is far from standard - Is there anything that will make the installation different as opposed to if it was installed on a completely standard car?

(excuse the ignorance, just here to learn!) :)

Cheers

Welcome Lightweight,
Can't really help with car alarm but this is the best deterrent ever...
Had mine for about 10 years and it's till OK, small size is what you need for a original sized steering wheel.
There is offers etc on the disclok a lot of times so shop around if you do get one.
