The seal at the end of the camshaft where it goes through to the pulley.
When you are doing the rocker gasket it is worth replacing the cork one for a rubber one from a later VW, can't remember a part number
or exactly which engine had the rubber one but I'm sure someone will know if the search button doesn't.

Can't think of anything else though.

Ben.

Ahh good call on the camshaft seal! Will defo have to replace that.
I've got the rubber seal but want to change the studs to bolts as I don't think the studs are applying enough pressure.

I have just changed my valve stem seals due to excessive smoke and increased oil consumption. Did them with head still fitted, tricky but possible. Could be worth changing yours if you have stripped out the cam and tappets.

erm.. going to be doin this job tomorow so had a quick look in the haynes manual.
it says after installing tappets and the camshaft your supposed to leave it overnight for the tappets to settle before starting?
never heard this one before?
can anyone shed some light on this.

I did this...I had to change the studs when I switched to the rubber gasket as the original ones have a lip on them, so it wouldn't seal correctly. Gasket came with the new studs though.

I guess they are hydraulic tappets? If so soak them upside down in fresh oil over night. Then once you fit them and torqued down the cam shaft leave them for a couple of hours before starting the car. This is so they settle before use.

I got your PM but could not reply?

I don't really know why the need to settle, I would follow the advice given in the manual there must be some reason.....
Any one else know?

I have mine in bits at the moment but I've found mine are slightly different as I can't remove the middle piston with the springs and ball bearing in as they have a metal coller holding it in and I think It will be destroyed if I try to remove it so I've drained the old black oil out them by compressing them then pressing in the ball bearing, I've then refilled them with some Gunk engine cleaner a couple of times to clean out the insides then I soak everything in Gunk overnight, wash it all out and I've reoiled 4 so far.

yeah you cannot fully take them apart as they are a slightly different type, best thing to do is once you have the plunger out of the housing is to use something sharp to press the ball valve in and release the old gunky oil.
then put in under a bath of oil and operate back and forth with the ball valve pushed open. this will expel air and old oil out.
i did this many years ago but the tap-pity noise has eventually returned so have decided to change em seeing as they are so cheap.
once i have the new ones in i will put up some pictures on how to strip the old ones.
dunno whats going on with the pm system but it just doesnt work at all for me now! :x

Ok so I've changed the tappets put new timing belt on and the new rocker cover gasket.
However the tapping noise has gone and been replaced by a quieter ticking noise instead.
Like a quiet tapping noise.
Now could this still be a tappet issue or because the tapping noise has "gone" I can now hear a different issue?
If it is still tappet noise it's really pissing me off because it's just cost me £80 of parts.
I recently changed the oil but do you think an oil flush then replace might fix this?

Did you notice any excessive wear on the cam lobes?

Ok that's weird started the car this morning and it's totally silent?
Tapping noises have gone!
I didn't notice any wear to the cam lobes, I did check them over just invade but they seemed fine.
Odly enough it idles better too, or maybe I'm imagining it.
Oh well, let's just hope it stays rattle free
