Realistic Auto Value

Seen a mk2 auto for sale locally,

88 F Reg GT
103k miles
2 owners
1 years tax
1 years mot
supposedly all in good condition (havnt spoken to the seller yet)

What is a realistic value if its in good nick with no real faults?

Been out of the game a while and prices have changed significantly in that time! :pilot:

I wouldn't pay more than £1500 for an auto. It would need to be very good for that money, as well. I keep an eye on the auctions on eBay and the ones that go to auction haven't actually sold for much more recently - it's just the classified ads that have high prices. Those cars take a long time to sell unless they're actually very good.

NB I think I've seen the car you're talking about; it looks decent enough and the current price (reduced by about £400 in the past 2 weeks) seems sensible.

Cheers Ed, spoken to the guy who claims he's taken it in px against some painting work he's doing for the old boy that owned it for 12 years.

Sounds like there isnt much history and that the only thing it needed for MOT was a wheel bearing.

I may go see it and make him an offer..

His wording irritates me as it is now 3 owners from new (or he could say 2 previous owners), but it still looks tidy.

Right been to see the car, overall its in very condition, with the following caveats:

One small rust hole in the paint on the pass door and some bubbling in the same door, overall not too bad at all.
Boot lock seal needs replacing
Rocker cover gasket probably needs replacing
Headlight clips broken on the drivers side fog
Headlight on the drivers side has suffered a stone chip
Accelorator pedal is very high and quite hard (harder than the break pedal)
Takes a little turning over to kick to life but is fine after that and idles around 850
Front pads will need replacing soon
Exhaust downpipe is original and may have a very small blow
Stereo not working? Possible wiring?
Felt like the two main vents wernt open for some reason?
Indicators have a bit of dirt in the bottom of them
Drivers side drive shaft gaiter may need replacing
New Mot (failed first time on bearing) looks like the last MOT was in 2010.
Long tax

All of these things do not worry me too much but what does is he said he only has the V5 slip as he's sent away for ownership. When I asked where the car was registered he was a bit vague as he has a place he resides in and a house he's not staying at..

He has 2 sets of keys but if I were to buy it would there be any trouble only having the V5 slip? Presumably its better to wait until the V5 arrives..

Have you driven the car? I wouldn't even dream of buying it without a good test drive and make sure the gearbox is working, including kickdown!
How much is it up for? My offer still stands for my Scala, a sorted car with an injection engine!

Hey Ian, yup drove it round round some side roads, and and A road. Gearbox was good, including dropping down directly to 2nd gear.

Up for £970, got him down to £700 but offered less so we shall see.. If he gets the V5 I may take it.

The Scirocco auto's I have driven all had a harder accelerator pedal. This is due to the addition of the kick down cable and different routing. Usually sorted with a good cleaning/lubrication of the mechanical linkages and pivots but it definitely isn't the regular set up of the manual.

Exhaust front pipe normally fail on the weld between the two pipes inside the front joint. You can hear the blow but usually can't see it.

Have you seen this Rohan, looks a tidy example?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-MK-2-VOL ... 3ce30a8f0c

Only thing I can see that is odd is the main beam warning light is yellow, that was correct on early MK2's up until about 1984?

Yes, I think up to 84/85 cars (until they'd used up all the old stock at the factory) had the yellow full-beam indicator light. You'd therefore want to question the mileage as this car may have had the clocks replaced at some point. Did all early mk2s have the fuel economy gauge, or was that only better-specced models? Usually I'd expect that, along with the water temp and fuel gauges inside the rev-counter, when you have a yellow full-beam light (I think).

Yes, the early cars had the fuel economy gauge as well. My Storm is an 84, it has the blue main beam warning light and the economy gauge and yes the fuel and water temperature gauges are in the rev counter.

Cheers Ian looks very tidy, I have a feeling it will go for about £1200..

The GT near me is a 1.6 auto in Flash silver. I think I may go for it at £700 as he says he has the V5 in his name and address now. If he has proof of ID to back it up I may buy it
