Time to refresh the front suspension
Since URN passed it's MOT with an advisory on the NS McPherson strut and also feeling the pain of hitting a few potholes since being back on the road, what options do I have to refresh the front end?
I don't want to upgrade, lower or make major modifications as the car is pretty much standard, but I do want to get the right product, rated springs etc. Is ECP / GSF a good place to start or are there better quality products at reasonable prices out there that will fit the bill? What spring rating should I go for? I suspect there's a few options available.

Eibach springs plus standard shocks always get good feedback - there's a few on here who've gone that route.
Worth getting some new wishbones/bushes and FEBI top mounts?
Plus Heritage are doing meyle steering racks at a reasonable £60 or so at the moment.

I can highly recommend Eibach springs with Bilstein B4 shocks, a great combination and even though slightly lower feel just like standard.
The springs will cost about £150 and the shocks I have seen for about £35 a corner. As Sean says change the front top mounts, which will cost about £28 for a pair.

What was the problem with the McPherson strut? Was it rust? If so changing the front shock will not help as they are an insert and fitted to your old McPherson strut.
You can get 2nd hand replacments which have been treated but they aint cheap and seem a little hard to get. Treating and painted what you have may me be the best option.

I have noticed recently that the N/S is running slightly lower than the O/S. Could be a spring break which isn't spotted, top mounts, bushes..... in a way it looks like the car has had a mild stroke - lopsided on the left.

sorry to bring up an old thread but im running eibach springs on standard shocks and had problems with the springs sitting very close to the bump stops which makes hitting/going over bumps very uncomfortable.GTXTRA wrote:Eibach springs plus standard shocks always get good feedback - there's a few on here who've gone that route.

would it be safe to cut down or even remove the bump stops to continue using the springs?
the shock absorbers are brand new bilstein inserts from vw heritage on the front and original newish oil filled on the rear.
I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

I have had cut down bump stops and they were fine. It was only a 30mm drop so don't know about anything more. Actually gave instructions with the springs I had about how much to take off.
There are companies that do shortened bump stops iirc.
