1992 Scala - Which engine?

Post by theboybailey »

Hi all ,

I have had my Scirocco back now for a good few months and the desire to start getting on with things is there now the weather has improved.

Therefore I have a few questions some of the more experienced owners may be able to help me out with.

1- I know it is a fuel injected 1.8 but have seen a couple of different types referred to and just wondered which one it would be?
2. The ride is getting a bit tired , it seems to now thunder into pot holes and grooves , any kits that could improve this?

3. I just want to get a bit more power from it , are there any easy engine transplants from others in the range? The clutch has an occasional slip on it so it will need some surgery at some stage so could be a one stop shop and do the lot.

Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated.

Still got a sunroof to fix as well , I just keep putting that off

Cheers Warren

1. I think yours will be a DX engine.
2. Loads. From standard replacements to fully adjustable coilovers. Just depends how much you want to spend.
3. Again loads. Depends what you want to spend. The 16v engine is fairly straight forward to fit. Also the 1.8 turbo from the newer generation VWs goes in without too much trouble.

Ben.

There should be a engine letter and number just below spark plug No.3, just need the first two letters mine is a DX for the Mk1 Golf fuel injection yours might be differnet as its the last year they was made so you might have a "cat" fitted to the exhaust have a look underneath for one.

Suspention is a big can of worms it really depends on what sort of ride you want, do you want to go lower, stick with standard set up...etc..... Let us know what sort of thing you are after and price you want to pay, as a rough guide standard set up with just replacing the shocks, new sturt tops and mounts, bump stops, dust covers and keeping the oringinal springs is about £150 ish
I would not even think about coilovers at the lower price range unless you drive the car at the weekend only or drive only on a smooth race track or you will get rattled to death!

Lots of choice on engine look in the FAQ for more info.
