More issues - mk1 and mk2 interior lighting - blue/gray wire

Post by mr.brown »

OK, so a small fire in the loom means I have to replace the interior illumination wiring - basically ALL the blue/gray wires. Not as bad as it seems as I have a complete mk1 loom to play with.

Sooooooo....the mk1 blue/gray wire starts with two branches from the headlight switch. One branch goes to the dash multiplug and the other goes to the Hazard switch then off to toward th fusebox. Near the fusebox there is a connector where the loom splits off (optionally) to the oil temp and clock, and in the other direction to the ashtray, cigarette lighter and mystery bulb.

Basically, that's it. It doesn't connect to the fusebox anywhere and seems to be solely powered from the headlight switch rheostat (dimmer).

The mk2 loom is similar apart from it has a huge crimp connector from which various blue/gray wires branch off.

However, one branch goes into connector A of the fusebox. Brownie points to anyone that can suggest why this is?

Glove box light? This list of connections shows the glove box light as being connected to pin A23.

The glovebox light only works when the ignition is switched on!
And not all models came with a glovebox light!

Looking at that diagram it says the blue/gray wire goes from pin A1 for dash lights - not clear which way the power's supposed to go - into pin A1 or coming out of it.

The mystery bulb near the cigarette lighter could be for the heater control light?

That must be it. Cheers :)

My heater control doesn't have a light fitting but the loom is from a different car hence my confusion.
