Mk2 Sunroof - Help please

Post by theboybailey »

Hi guys,

I am sure this is something that someone knows how to do and can shed some light on it for me

I have a 1992 mk2 with a factory sunroof however , when I owned the car previously it worked perfectly however whilst under the ownership of a non appreciating owner it has been sealed with silicone so consequently doesnt open.

This is only really becoming an issue now as it is leaking with all the rain, I want to get the car working as it should rather than just sealing it up as has been done. The handle spins freely so possibly thecable has become unattached.

What do you think the best approach should be ?
How do I actually get to the gubbins of it to see what is wrong?

Cheers
Warren

I've never stripped one, so can't help much there. but the leak will be a blocked drain channel. They fill with rubbish then fill up with water. It is a common misconception that the seal on the sunroof stops water coming in. Its only there to keep the wind noise down.

Iirc the Rocco has 2 drains which run down the inside of the A pillar and come out behind the plastic poo shields in the front arches. look for a plastic pipe of around half inch diameter, probably with a rubber valve on the bottom. Clean out all the rubbish out the bottom and your leak should stop.

Once you've got your roof open, make sure that the gutter round the edge of the opening is nice and clean, and this will help stop it happening again

I think there is a drain at each of the four corners; front ones as described, rear ones can be traced along the roofline and down the c-pillars at the back.

There are 4 drain holes as Ed says, one in each corner.
To start with you need to remove the headlining for the sunroof, to do this you move a spring whilst the roof is in the tilt position!
Where are you based?

Hi guys thanks for that, the first problem is I dont think I can get the roof to open to see if the drains are blocked, I will peel away all the silicone and see what happens then with regards to getting it to open, I was worried about doing this as he appears to have siliconed all of it but if it doesnt affect whether or not it leaks that will help.

The car is based in Grimsby but would be willing to make bacon sandwiches and coffees etc etc and cover fuel for anyone fancying coming over to help with this if I cant get any further.

Cheers

Bit far for me Im afraid.

But once you get it apart and figure out whats wrong then bear in mind that pretty much all the sunroof parts are the same as mk2 golf ones.

The only bit thats different are the guide plate and I think the handle mechanisn as the golf ones dont tilt.

Grimsby is a bit away from London, where I am most of the time!
Keep an eye out for North East mini-meets in the future, we usually meet up a few times a year around Durham/Teeside/North Yorks. We sometimes have a session of maintenance and repairs!

Ok just peeled away about a tonne of sealant, I can now get the roof to open horary but only on the slide, the tilt isnt working.

How do I go about replacing that seal and getting the tilt working? Any tips?

Drains look clear which is great

Cheers

Carefully pour some water into the drains. in general, they will block at the bottom. Keep pouring it in until you can see it coming out the bottom. If you cam fill it right up then you got a big blockage

Does the handle turn the other way when you push the button in? If it doesn't remove it and then turn it on the mechanism underneath until a little pin pops out, then screw it back on and try to tilt the roof. If it will still not tilt then you may find the guides are broken, these are still available from VW Classic parts.

The only way to be certain is by sliding back the headlining panel.

You will find it almost impossible to fit a new seal without being able to tilt! I removed the complete roof panel on both of mine to renew the seal.

If you have a compressor and blow gun, I'd try blowing air through the drain hoses

Maybe this could help.

Found it one time on the net and kept it ever since because it could come in handy some time.

Brilliant, thanks for posting, mine's not leaking but it's definitely hard to crank.
