A common problem on these gearboxes, the synchromesh is going on the 2nd gear in the gearbox. Have you checked the oil level in the gearbox? Or even better change the gearbox oil which is often overlooked this might help or make no difference at all but still worth doing as the oil is not that expensive or find another gearbox as it will be cheaper than rebuilding the one you have.
My Golf sometimes crunches if you try to change gear quickly when its cold, I just change gear slowly and its been fine for the last 100,000 miles!

in that case i shall change the trans oil and hope it lasts like your golf lol.

bit lazy this bit as the car isn't at mine its stored in a garage so would prefer to know what to get/look for before hand to save me time a effort.

How do you drain the box? is there a plug? or is it a sumo job and new gasket? and lastly what trans oil do they take?

thanks for all your help mate, on both posts :)

If you don't have a 17mm Allen key this tool is handy

Very helpful site and loads of info on there, scroll down to the oil change bit.

I'll look into which oil I used, try searching 020 gearbox oil.

after looking into it a little more via a link on the brokevw site i found that Synchromesh oil normally sorts the issue.

where do i get it? and what am i asking for?

i have found this what is mentions on the other site but it also says its a GM product which this isn't
