Scirocco Register

just picked up my first rocco tonight to add to the 16vmk3 I have :) got a bargain and it looks so wicked! it's got a scirocco register sticker on it so maybe at some point it belonged to one of you?

such a cool car. handling is so different to my heavy mk3, really fun. let the project commence!

yep she's a scala..





I'm from northwest Hampshire, a place called middle wallop. this is my third vw now, after having two mk3s. planning on driving the valver and from next week taking the rocco off the road and giving her an abf and some other treats.. any rocco owners close by?

Mind the ABF - it's a little tall for a Rocco.

Local chap to you aka AdamG has one in a Scala and there is contact between bonnet and engine.

9a the one to go for.

thanks for the advice.. i've seen loads of abf'd mk2s on the net so didn't think it was a problem, plus they have more power and are a little more in abundance.. although i did read somewhere about the throttle cable on the tb being a little high.

So whats wrong with the engine in the car?

mechanically it's fine but I want more power with good handling

things i do when i get a rocco - servicing/maintenance stuff aside.

new bushing - rear axle in particular.
front lower strutbrace - loads of cheap mk1 golf based options £upwards.
new suspension - i'm a coilover fan but ianaudia4 knows his stuff re. gentle upgrades.

Drive and enjoy for a while - a well maintained DX engined Rocco will surprise you re. keeping up with the moderns in normal use but if I was starting from scratch I'd go for a 9a as mentioned, 2.0 16v corrado engine - nice mix of torque and rev-ability, add some KR cams for extra fiz. Job done. Upgrade brakes to Rocco 16v 256mm (carriers tricky to source) or g60 (minimum wheel size 15'') front brakes and servo upgrade (see FAQ).

A few 20v cars out there - beautifully executed ones and tatty homebrews that are never seen again so tread carefully before heading down that route.

I'm often down at the Phirm in Hartley Wintney - picking up my 16v from there on Tuesday in fact if you're about. Tim and Paul down there can offer a lot of common sense re these cars too based on working on mine for last 8 years!

I bought the car specifically as a project to learn on and to use as a toy to take to the ring and for fun trips in addition to another car. wanted to go down 16v route to get more power than my mk3 but with great handling.

out of interest why do you recommend a 9a swap over an abf? and what about a kr? can't find any 9a's on ebay but there are a few kr's.

read up a bit about brakes last night, the stock ones aren't great! think I'm gonna go for vauxhall calipers and carriers and mk2 discs with a mk2 servo and cylinder upgrade. read somewhere about mk4 calipers on the rear (getting rid of the drums)

gonna fab some strut braces up at work.

the tax and mot runs out in sept so not worth paying for all that right now.. been enjoying the drive of her a lot the last few days tho! love it. the 80s squares and triangles styling are just awesome.

just had a proper look underneath.. no rust anywhere! :) a little bit inside the engine bay, easily treatable

Love this car. No other Vw handles like the baby you've just picked up.

ABF is a tall block and has been known to cause clearance issues. I'm running a 3A with a piper cam in my GTX just now with no issues and the acceleration is fantastic.

Have gone down the Vauxhall route with the brakes as well although I found the stock brakes were fine if you kept up with the fluid changes.

I don't think the rears need discs as the majority of braking is done up front...my opinion anyway.
