My 1988 carb'd scala is currently running a bosch 90amp alternator, though it charges fine the bearings are shot! i'm struggling to find a replacement 90 amp would a 65/75amp be ok?

Only problem with that is I use the car every day and cant really have it off the road while I wait for mine to be reconditioned. So if I can find one in decent condition I can fit and use that while I get the original rebuilt as a spare.

The 90amp alternators were only really fitted onto the later cars, this was probably down to VW standardising across the model ranges.

My 1989 Scala injection had a 55amp alternator when I bought it and my Storm had a 45amp, I had to change the Storm one as it gave up the ghost a few weeks after getting it.

A 45, 55 or 65amp will be fine, just fit it and as said previously get yours refurbished, then change back, then you will have a spare!

You can get them new but the are expensive.

I think GSF sell them as well.

I guess a lower amp would be fine I know I'm only running a 65amp on my Mk1 golf Gti DX engine.

Also worth looking under Golf and check the connections are the same.
