Cutting out problem!

Post by dixy42 »

Moving on to my NEXT problem. So I bypassed the fuel return and my car has been running fine ever since. BUT NOW when I have driven over 50/60 it runs lovely and smooth but when I come to slow down I put my foot on the clutch and instant death! Starts again straight away with a few flaps of the accelerator pedal but is still very temperamental then after. Either revs dropping really low or a complete cut out. Any ideas guys?

Note: usually I wouldn't be so bothered as work is a walkable distance but with only 3 weeks to go until I drive to 'men in vw' show in holland (!!!) I'm getting worried if she is up to it or not. Please restore my faith in beautiful car!

How have you "bypassed" the fuel return?

Removed the fuel return filter. Pipe going straight from fuel pump to the carb

The inline filter should be on the fuel delivery pipe before the fuel pump!

You are misconstrued my friend. I have an inline filter but after the fuel pump there used to be a three way bowl on coming from pump, one to carb and one returning fuel to tank. That is what I have removed.

Swirl pot, not filter ;)

please don't hit me for this, but you could try reinstating the return, but shove a mig welder tip up the return pipe, so the fuel pump has some form of pressure relief.

I'm also assuming that you've checked filters are ok and the ignition system is all healthy

Could also just be that the carb and/or ignition timing needs setting up

I have had similar issues in the past with my mk1 golf and my current Rocco.

One the Golf it was originally the dizzy, it was basically warn and had play in it causing it to cut out etc. This was also the case with my Rocoo. i got a dizzy off ebay - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Simonbbc-Ignit ... 1131044010

Also had this type of issue again with my Golf and that time it was simply a split in one of the fuel lines meaning it was sucking in air.

Ok so I put a T piece in so the fuel comes from the pump, splits into two and feeds carb and return. The return pipe is smaller so it won't be taking as much fuel as the carb. This has been fine for a few days. But I went on a longer drive tonight (around 20 miles or so) drove fine at first but now when I only have my foot down a tad ( in any gear) it coughs and splutters like hell and as soon as I put my foot down it thuds and then rockets off fine. Any ideas please guys.
