Epic Fan Belt Squeal

Post by Risocco »

Hi all, my 1.6 GT is being rather annoying. When I start her up, the fan belt makes a horrific noise for a good 30 seconds or so. Very embarrissing, esp when leaving work in a public car park

Noticed that the OEM volt meter gets to 12 when she first fires and takes a minute or so to reach around 14. Is this connected to the squeal? Where would I start to look for the solution, aternator or battery ect...

Fan belt is a week old, battery is a good few years old if it helps.

Any pointers greatly appreciated :hi:

Just sounds like the alternator belt is loose. This will give the squeal and also make the alternator inefficient, which could result in the odd voltage you describe. Not hard to fix - one 7mm allen key, one 13mm socket.

Cheers mate, have re-tightened the belt a few times the last week, must have worked its way lose again. As long as its nothing expensive!

Hi Alex, You should always re-tighten a new fan/alternator belt after about 100 miles running as they stretch. Usually after readjusting you don't need to do it again.
