New gearbox - but what clutch?

Post by Beddo88 »

Hi All

I've sourced a replacement gearbox from a friend as synchro is beginning to go on mine. Mines a 1.8 scala, with an ACD box. Replacement is a '4T' box, which has a much higher 5th ratio for better motorway cruising.

Looking online, this is listed as having a 190mm clutch when fitted. Mine is a 210mm clutch. It's also got 90mm flanges, but I think these should be fairly straightforward to swap for the 100mm ones on my current box.

Before I spend the money and buy a clutch, is anyone able to confirm which clutch I would need? Is the clutch size limited by the gearbox or the engine?

Someone has also mentioned that the starter might sit in a different location, which would affect the engaging of the starter on the flywheel.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers
Dan

i think they are the same as i had a gearbox from a much newer 1.4 golf that had 190mm clutch and 90mm flanges.
i changed the flanges and the box bolted straight on no problem. i think the main difference is in the size and shape of the flywheel that determines the clutch size.

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!
