Calling all MK1 GTI owners

Post by sciroccogti »

Hi Chaps,

It is my 1st post so be gentle ;-)

I own a 1981 MK1 GT1 in Baikal blue. I love the car and dont think I will ever part with it. I am trying to find out how many GTIs are left in the UK (yes I have looked on the howmanyleft website but that includes mk2s registered in 1981 as well I think??) and what state they are in, ie how may owners, mileages, colour changed, modified or original unmolested examples.

I have found 5 over the last few years and recorded what data was available via their pictures, listings or advert descriptions.

I have spoken to Gordon (GTSI) and he suggested you guys may be able to help.

Many thanks advance (and sorry if I broke any rules)

Mark

Hi, is this the car that came up for sale near Croydon a while back?

off top of head - you'll be amazed to know that at least three other baikal cars survive, one has been repainted monaco blue at some point.

I have one that had been messed with/ruined by various keepers before me - it's in final stages of rebuild/upgrade and alexander aka 'sciroccofilsbilder' -sic - has a standard one that appeared as a road test car back in the mags in 81.

beyond that i'm aware of a silver one that appears at the northern shows very occasionally.

a very clean white one was sold overseas about 6 years ago by the chap I acquired my car from subsequently.

here's mine -

I have an '81 Mk1 in the same blue which I must confess has other primer colours as I have had to do the usual repairs. Still going strong though!

Will be making an appearance soon...

Friend of mine, Geoff Hume, had this one , photo at Driffield Motor show around 10 years ago. I believe he passed it on to his brother-in-law a few years later. I hope it is still tucked away safe somewhere!

I remember reading a good article on this alongside a standard car. Look forward to seeing pics of it now...
