Salutations from a New Member

Post by CBJacobs »

Hallo friends,
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Brad, I live in the USA and I have a VW/Audi addiction.
My first car was a '78 Scirocco, my second a '77 (mainly for parts) and my third a '79 5-speed. I have not owned a Scirocco for 20 years *gasp* but would love to either acquire a nice Mk I or a modern model (if VW USA could be convinced to offer it here). Presently, I drive a '01 Audi A4 and my wife drives a much quicker '98 Jetta 2.0T.

Some photos follow. I look forward to reading about your Scirocco experiences and gaining insight into my favorite car (which I remember seeing for the first time on a TV avert ca. 1975 at age 8 and knowing I would enjoy having one some day).

Cheers,
Brad

All photos ca. 1987-1989. The tall chap is my friend who know works for supercar tuner Kleemann...the black, silver and brasil brown cars were all mine. The black one had several cheeky and low-tech graphics applied to the rough spray-can paint job (it had been the other chap's parts car before I bought it!)

Welcome to the forum, and nice set of Mk1s there :stop:

Getting hold of good ones in the 21st century will be a little more tricky than it was last century, though. Your best bet will probably still be your side of the pond, especially in the states with drier climes such as California. As you know, rust and rot is their biggest enemy, caused by humid air like found in on the British isles.

Thanks, Tempest. I'll be keeping my eyes open. I hope someo of the US-based members of this forum amay be able to help me spot a good candidate. I understand the rust issue well...I live in a rust-and-corrosion prone area (Pennsylvania) and my '78 was actually junked with only 120k miles on the clock (only 11 years old or so) because the frame rusted and deteriorated. The last days before I scrapped it, the rear left tire rubbed against the wheel arch whenever I took a hard right turn. That was a strong motor (1.6 IIRC) and Iused to ahve fun racing a friend in his newer 1.8 GTI (I always won because his car was heavy. To save weight I had removed the rear seats and anything not essential).
Cheers,
Brad

PS. I love your 928. I've fancied those since the early days. I nearly bought one a handful of years ago but bowed to family pressure to obtain a roadster. I presently have a '74 MB 450SL.

Thanks, Jimmy. I could easily become a Mk III enthusiast also, if VW USA would allow me to!
I'm looking forward to getting to know you chaps.

Thanks, '81. You know, I was wrong about not owning a Scirocco since the early 1990s...I have this one:

Yes, it was made in Germany!

Welcome along fella, the cars look awesome.
I'll never understand why VW USA won't sell the new Rocco over there, bonkers decision given how lovely it is.

Hi, Welcome along Brad, We need all the Mk1 owners we can get (getting a bit scarce on the roads now)
I'm astonished that the Mk3 is not available in the States..
