Leaking around sender unit

Post by munnyella »

Hi

Filled the car up today for the first time, (had it two weeks and only taxed from tomorrow) fuel pi$$ing out from underneath, on returning home, looks like the sender seal is leaking under the inspection plate.

Is VW heritage is my only option for a new seal, is it an easy job? am I likely to find it just needs the old one re seating?

Hopefully this is the only leak, only the front of the tank is wet and its definately coming out of that seal, but I guess I wont know if the seams have gone as well until I fix this bit.

At least it looks like the filler neck is OK!!

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

you'll need to get at least some of the fuel out if the sender is to be removed (assuming it hasn't already leaked out)

you may find that the sender has been taken out and not refitted correctly, but you are suppose to fit a new one each time. i'd be tempted to just chuck a new one at it

Assuming its a carb car the sender/ level unit itself might be the issue.
They can crack when being removed or refitted- had this on the gtl.
Even a hairline crack will see fuel coming out when tank full.

Sender unit itself is now a classic parts item I believe.
