bigger discs

Post by aaron »

i have been given a set of mk2 golf gti callipers for my rocco as it has solid discs on (cue the laughter  ) and wanted to put the vented disc in, can anyone tell me what the biggest disc is that gti calipers will take. really need some more bite from the middle peddle as we all know how average the standard stuff is. also any advice on the best disc/pads combo would be much appreciated. thanks in advance guys.

Early MK2 Golf GTi's came with 239mm discs, later ones were 256mm. I don't think MK2 Golf calipers will go straight on a MK2 Scirocco.

Just to clarify, All mk2 GTI 8v's were 239mm vented, mk2 GTI 16v were 256mm

The 256mm conversion on a scirocco is a great upgrade, you use mk2 16v spec discs and calipers, but you need to find caliper carriers from a scirocco 16v, or mid eighties Audi 80/90/coupe (the boxy square ones) that had the 256mm discs.

Just a quick question on this.

I've spent a few hours cleaning up and painting the hubs and carriers for my MK2 1989 before considering what I was going to do for a brake upgrade. Pretty sure they were 239 vented.

Does this mean I've wasted my time or can I get converters to bolt on 256 16v calipers.

I thought I read in the FAQ you can use Vauxhall GM Girling calipers with converter plates.

If so where can I get them. What other options are there??

Is that light at the end of the tunnel or a train coming the other way?

Here is a link to the Mk1 Golf forum detailing the Vauxhall brake upgrade.
I have performed it on my Mk1 Scirocco but have not driven it since doing so to give a review.
