Clutch cable query

Post by obrut429 »

Hi All

My clutch cable snapped last night (on a MK1) - and i have temporarily bodged a new cable on, whilst sourcing the correct clutch clip/fastenings (which popped off when the cable snapped). However, I had to fit a LHD clutch cable to get any clutch bite and make it driveable. The LHD cable is obviously shorter and follows a poor path around the back of the inlet manifold, making the clutch very heavy - but the clutch cable itself was longer than my RHD spares.

I tried fitting two RHD clutch cables, but both did not have enough length to allow the clutch to disengage when all was reassembled. Only the LHD length - which had a longer length protuding at the gearbox end when installed, seemed to allow the clutch to disengage *just*. The old cable which snapped had plenty of unused adjustment on the clutch cable gearbox end, yet the new cables had none....

I can only think that the clutch cable that was failing was stretching and that my clutch is worn- but it would have had to stretch alot to account for the difference now between cable lengths OR are there different clutch cable lengths? Both my RHD spares are the same length so I am not sure, but I think I recall when assembling the car last year having a similar problem sourcing a suitable cable ---can anyone corroborate?

Cheers
