Cam cover and timing belt cover stencil numbers?

Post by polov8 »

I'm currently building up an EG 1.6 injection motor for the GLI conversion I'm doing on my GLS, and the cam cover has the number "566" stenciled on it from the factory. The timing belt cover had numbers on it, but it was too far gone to make out what they were. What are these numbers, and what do the signify? What numbers do you (or did you) have on yours?

I'm guessing they mean nothing, and are just from the production process, but I'd like to know, and Like to reproduce them when I clean up the tinware.

Both my early timing belt covers have 622 on them, my MK1 was originally a GLS but we converted it to early factory GLI spec as well.

Interesting, I'm looking to replicate it purely for originality, but I'd like to know why it's there too.

Ok, Timing belt 622

Cam cover 566

Any more numbers for the list?

no idea what they are for, my cam cover has 287 on it and there is a picture of a GLI in my Haynes book which has 335 must be some sort of factory batch or ident :dunno:

Well! I was looking through the Bentley manual, and came across this:

I'll be honest, I've never seen numbers painted down there, if they were present on any engine I've had they've long since rusted off. But it is interesting that when new, the engines were marked as to whether they were at the top/middle/bottom of the production tolerance, and pistons were selected based on this. This code signifies the exact bore diameter when new, and tells the next guy which pistons to put in.

Based on this, I'm even more intrigued as to what the cam cover numbers might indicate.
