Mk2 GT2, 2nd attempt at Scirocco ownership

Post by MacColl »

Well the Red dead Revolver (89 GT) is now deceased, just too much welding to do and little time. Stripped and all usable parts are saved (some already in use) for my new purchase a 92 GT2..

I jumped on a Mega bus train ticket one way to Crew and came home the following day, how it looked, It's a pearl grey metallic colour..

I am reasonably happy as it was very reasonably priced and has MOT till Jan. The worst part is the paint and a number of dings where the previous owner was the victim of terrible paint job and this accounts for the price. Most importantly is little evidence of rust, mainly surface stuff that I can deal with without taking it off the road.

However it needs loads of (hopefully achievable) stuff done, little annoying things that I have started to address. I remain unsure about the Pierburg carb which the owner said was running fine. I'm not convinced but might be fuel filler neck/other variables. Might just fit the Weber I have.

It has an aftermarket sunroof which I would never choose to have but it will paint up and doesn't leak, actually gives better head room. It also has some electrical stuff needing addressed like stereo wiring, bad wiring needing removed from alarm and electric windows de-railing.

The list is endless mate. If I was closer I would give you a hand.
I have no doubt you will have it all sorted in time.

Hopefully :yup: but I'll go for last chance saloon for now though.

Cheers Ian for having a look at this at Biggar, Yes a big list but just a matter of managing my time and not trying to sort everything in one go. I've also got plenty new parts to hand from the previous car.

I'll see you soon OMR.

Colour coded bodykits with unpainted bumpers always looks right in my eyes. Good stuff and best of British with the future plans :good:

I agree about the bumpers, it was actually on Vortex I noticed a lot of cars have this combo, my paint however is a mess and the bumpers need a good blackening.

So body work remains last as a priority right now.I have intermittent idle, lack of acceleration and a erratic instrument panel to deal with. Got very annoyed today because I stalled in the middle of Kilmarnock and struggled to get started and with a passenger in the car too :ire: cue the old car criticism

Something going on electrically and with the fuel system with this car with a poor previous alarm install and various straggling wires. Factor in the Pierburg carb which I was assured was running perfectly but I'm not convinced. The Pierburgs days might be numbered as I have the Weber there ready to go but I'll try the following.. time is the real issue right now

I've cut this fuel filter down and will fit it to the fuel pick up/ also replace the engines fuel filter and check for debri.I'll also be having a good look at the fuel lines/pipes.

very careful cutting..

Been trying to sort through parts from the previous red Scirocco, need to sort storage, some junk and these were the bumper irons on the new car :shocking:

Not pleasant finding glass/crap like this :shocking: , and the bench like many parts on the car has been fitted with the wrong screws bending the brackets..
Image
Image
Rough cleaning and going without rear seats just now..
Image

So I've got electrical gremlins currently and have already removed the alarm.. still wiring to sort because of after market electric windows/central locking creating confusion.
Image

Also the fuel system seemed to be causing carb problems so I went for a quick fix I had seen for now..made sure the area was clean/dust free..
Image
Image
Few bit of corrosion bobbing about
Image
The end of the pick up had bits jamming over half the holes.. where arrowed..
Image
Removed the small cap at the end, cleaned with some carb spray..
Image
Then fitted my customised fuel filter..
Image

Seems to be running 100% better but still think the Pierburg isn't creating good idle from cold, plenty things to check first, might well be electrical.

I'm really getting fed up with this.

Yet another 80's Volkswagen I have owned where I just can't pin point problems. I find it really draining every day trying to get an understanding of what is wrong. I'm in my final stretch of Uni and need to rely on the car without it being a distraction. If I work on the car various friends and family are on my case saying "every time you go near that car we get nervous"

The fix with the fuel filter I thought had worked but yet again I have problems idling. I think the Pierburg carb will be going this weekend and might possibly be smashed with one of the farm sledge hammers. I have a Weber DMTL there that I re-built for the old car ready to go so fingers crossed it should go on without a hitch.

There are also electrical things that bug me along with no rev counter. I just want an achievable list of jobs that are fun to work on, not a succession of unknown problems that are a chore.

We have light, a burnt wire all the way to the fuse box from the interior light was bugging me and I was stubborn about doing a good fix with the wires going down the A-Pillar not the window seal that someone had done previously. So now fully functioning door activated light.

Image

So was feeling a bit more upbeat and wondered why there was a cable tie on the hand brake, so I cut it off arrived home went to park up and the lever pulled all the way up and the car nearly rear ended a neighbours :shocking:

I discovered that there is a tang of metal that hooks to the double handbrake bracket that looks bent (see red arrow). Someone has gone for a quick fix with the Cable tie :focus:
Image

So I dually fitted another cable tie and will swap the lever at the weekend. I have also decided to remain amused more than annoyed with the car :yup:

glad to hear it, they need alot of motivation, but the more you learn the more you'll know, and the easier problems will be accept and put right,
best of luck man, and keep up the updates.

^Thanks for kind comments :good:

Car was being particularly unkind in the idle stakes today to the extent that I felt constantly feathering the throttle wasn't that safe for driving in town.

The Weber I have will be fitted but with little time I tried changing the rather perished fuel pipe to the carb inlet and whilst doing this pulled the mesh/gauze sock shaped filter thing out of there. It had a certain amount of dirt caught in it so it wasn't replaced. So I turned the car over and it's still barely idling/stuttering I'm manually revving the throttle giving the carb a bit of a waggle and theres the simple problem!

THE CARB BASE IS CLEARLY LEAKING PROBABLY SPLIT !

So I'm pleased I know what is wrong but I should really be writing my final essay for Uni. I also need the car for my P/T job so must do a fix. God dam these cars, still smiling though :yup:

Junk was removed, I'm sorry but I am not a fan of these Pierburgs right now..
Image

Weber DMTL fitted, simple and reliable and also swapped on a painted cam cover quickly with a cork gasket and loads of hylomar..
Image
Image

With the mild weather I didn't even bother with the outer air box of which I have a good condition one to clean up and sort the mounting and various cables/fuel lines..
Image

So without a rev counter (another job to sort) tuning isn't fun so I have been gradually adjusting leaning out and checking the spark plugs. I have to say taking a blast along one of many Ayrshire country roads with the induction noise, no rear seats or door cards and massively more responsive running has definitely given me renewed hope :yup:

Also swapped the handbrake lever that doesn't require a cable tie to hold the cables in place and fitted a heater valve that actually allows for cold air :good:
