GTII from Aberdeenshire

Post by klittle »

Hi folks, thought I would introduce myself. I'm located just north of Aberdeen & got my Scirocco earlier this year. This is my first one & it's always been a car that I wanted to own. So when my horrific Volvo V70 died a death (I hate Volvo's!!!!) I got the oportunity to get own the GTII. Had 117K on the clock with a full stamped service history & now done 121K, fully wax oiled in all the places you can't see from new, so the underside looks better than the top, couple of small patches to do when weather improves & garage cleared, usual door & bonnet lip chips.

Story so far - It didn't run worth a sod when I got it, still had the original Pieburg (is that how you spell it?) carb & wouldn't pull worth a damn, did some investigation & found that the whole vacuum system was basically shot, so being a Weber man I swapped it for a DMTL. 1Hr later & she was running like a dream (very easy job by the way), needless to say she goes like she should which is pretty rapid for a car of her age as I'm sure most of you on here know only too well. What else.........oh yes, rear shoes were seized solid, so replaced them & have both rear bearings to do this weekend, another easy job. I think me stripping the rear hubs & putting them back together was the final nail for the bearings. But hey ho, at £11 per set I don't care. Oh, O/S GTII pillar badge has lost most of the yellow, but managed to get a replacement set on EBay the other day (originals taken off old car), so will take damaged one off & replace it, the old one will be brought back to life by my artistic wife with some of her fancy painting skills. Oh, by the way, the wife loves the car & constantly wants to take it when ever she can. I've tried the excused like, "it hasn't got power steering" or "no electric windows" but no, she likes it as much as I do...darn it!!!

Welcome aboard, we another member from your neck of the woods, Colin, AKA DT1.
Nice looking car you have there, could you be tempted to come down to Biggar at the end of the month for Volksfling, always a good show.

Hi to all & thanks for the welcome.

Latest Update, NS rear wheel bearing replaced this morning, jacked it up & when I spun the wheel, boy did it rumble, hour or so later all back together & nice & silent. Setup the timing as it was pinking a bit & replaced the OF GTII badge on the pillar, so all coming together nicely. I just need a new aerial to fit the wing, old one was shot, took off the inner plastic wheel arch & removed the old one so I can match it to something this week. I knew it was good nick under neath but it is spotless under the plastics, very happy person!!!

To answer the question about the MK2 golf partially in the pic, that's belong to a guy I work with & he's a MK2 golf fanatic, that one is converted to a VR6 & will be for sale very shortly, very good solid car. He's just bought himself a BMW M6 tuned to 500bhp!!!!, but he still has another MK2 golf that is being built at the moment & converted to 4wd, it has a an A3 1.8 turbo (big one) engine with TT 4wd system with fully selective setup via digital control panel, full cage etc etc etc etc, anyway I thing it's about 350bhp for now, but plan is for more!!! Oh, he also has a MK1 golf in his garage in the process of a bare metal rebuild.

I'll see what I can do about coming to biggar, just depends on what the wife has appointment ways as she runs her own photography business & sign making. Would love to come though, anything to take the GT for a blast :chortle:

Oh, one point, I have noticed a lot of people saying how poor the back seat space is in the GTII's, ok so it's not up to modern standards, but my kids are 15 & 12 & both fit in fine, ok so they don't have room to fight................ :yahoo: but they both love it (call it the go-kart), the wifes car is a 4.7 grane cherokee with loads of room & they would rather go in the rocco!! I love my kids

Meant to ask, DT1 where abouts in this neck of the woods you from, I'm just outside Turriff.

Another mod added to the Rocco I forgot to mention, suffered the usual dull brakes when I got it, there wasn't anything wrong with the vented discs or calipers but I decide to replace the discs anyway, so got myself a set of vented/cross drilled.grooved & some green stuff pads. Now, they did take a wee while to bed in, but boy they have been improved, press the pedal & they bite!!

Sorry, thought I'd replied. I'm in Newmachar.

Guess you come through here when you're going to Aberdeen, so if you get to Biggar you'll know who the white Scirocco belongs to. :yup:
